Dierdre "Dede" Scozzafava represents District 122 in the New York State Assembly, which comprises large portions of St. Lawrence County, Lewis County and a small portion of Oswego County. A Republican, her voter base lies in the conservative Lewis County.

Life and career

First elected in 1998, Scozzafava is the current Ranking Minority Member of the Codes Committee, as well as a member of the Education and Local Government committees. For the 2001-2002 session she served on the Standing Committees on Economic Development, Education, and Social Services. She is one of 41 Republicans in the 150-seat Assembly. She is also the first ever female Minority Leader Pro Tempore in the history of the New York State Assembly.

Prior to her election she served as a Village of Gouverneur Trustee for four years, subsequent to which she served as Mayor of Gouverneur, from 1993-1998.

Unlike conservative Republicans, Scozzafava is pro-choice and supports same-sex marriage.[1]

In addition to her work in the Assembly, Scozzafava works as an investment advisor for RBC Dain Rauscher Inc., which is located in Watertown, New York. According to campaign filing records, she, her husband and other family members are the largest donors to her campaigns.

Her opponents have already started questioning Scozzafava's ties to Seaway Capital Partners, which is run by her brother and which had about $192,000 in tax liens on it. One of Seaway's holdings is the Hackett's department stores. Scozzafava is listed as chief operating officer for the company on her legislative Web site; however, she has said she hasn't had any direct ties with the company since 2007.[2]

She holds a B.S. degree from the Boston University School of Management, as well as an M.B.A. from the Clarkson Graduate School of Management.

2009 special election

On July 22, 2009, Scozzafava was chosen by the eleven Republican Party county chairs located in the 23rd Congressional district to be the Republican nominee for the special election to fill John M. McHugh's seat in Congress who resigned in September 2009[3] to become Secretary of the Army.[1]

Conservatives have criticised Scozzafava for accepting the endorsement of the Working Families Party in her assembly campaigns, noting the close ties between that party and liberal activist group ACORN.[4] She has also received the endorsement of left-wing activist and author Markos Moulitsas Zúñiga, founder and publisher of the blog Daily Kos,[5], The Honorable Newt Gingrich,[6] The Honorable Peter T. King,[6] the National Rifle Association (NRA),[6] the organization of gay and lesbian Republicans called the Log Cabin Republicans,[6] and the largest labor union in New York State, New York State United Teachers (NYSUT).
