Steven Lisberger's 1982 sci-fi film "Tron" was a special effects bonanza that was disqualified for the Best Visual Effects Oscar the year it came out, as the Academy felt that employing computers to animate film visuals was "cheating." "Tron" famously used extensive CGI, making it the first major feature film to use computers as extensively as it did. The film is about a human computer programmer (Jeff Bridges) who is dematerialized by a malevolent, intelligent computer program, and rematerialized inside a computer mainframe.
Inside the mainframe, computer programs are human-shaped beings that must compete in blood sports, aka video games, at the behest of their "Users," spoken of like deities. Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) is a dashing heroic program who aims to confront the tyrannical Master Control Program, and Jeff Bridges joins Tron to help.

The 1990s were a great time for television sci-fi. It was the heyday of Star Trek, with The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager all running in syndication. But, at the same time, another science fiction show, Babylon 5, pushed the envelope and arguably paved the way for loftier fare, such as the acclaimed Battlestar: Galactica reboot. What made Babylon 5 so special?
For one thing, it pioneered the idea of serialized television. Under the helm of J. Michael Straczynski, who dipped his toe into similar fare with the short-lived Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future (another Gone But Not Forgotten favourite), Babylon 5 was unique in that it told one continuous story over its five-season run. If you were a fan of the show, you really couldn’t afford to miss one episode, with so much continuity between each episode that the entry point for non-viewers was almost non-existent.

It's been nearly a decade and a half since Disney took us back into the digital world of Tron with the long-awaited, eagerly anticipated sequel "Tron Legacy." Fueled by an unbelievable soundtrack from Daft Punk, the film from "Top Gun: Maverick" director Joseph Kosinski was visually dazzling and offered up some exhilarating action sequences, even if the story left something to be desired. While certain elements of the movie haven't aged very well, such as a digitally, de-aged duplicate of a young Jeff Bridges who now looks like he's in an old video game rather than a blockbuster movie, I think "Tron Legacy" delivers a satisfying sci-fi adventure, and the highs outweigh the lows.
Well, with "Tron 3" reportedly starting production last month, there's no better time to revisit "Tron Legacy" in the form of an incredible new piece of artwork by artist Raid71, on sale today at Bottleneck Gallery.

A lot of sci-fi films helped shape the genre into what it is today, but perhaps none of them are as underrated as the 1982 film "Tron." The original entry into a franchise that would come to span several decades was studded with soon-to-be stars like the incomparable Jeff Bridges, who would go on to earn an Academy Award.
Bridges stars in the action-adventure as Kevin Flynn, a video game developer who gets trapped inside his own software and has to interact with the programs inside his computer's main frame to escape. Digital technology was still emerging in the 1980s, and computers were relegated to those with a proclivity for science. All that is to say, the public wasn't ready for a movie filled with symbolic computer metaphors, and the film was not a success.
However, as computers began to rise in popularity, so too did "Tron." Early web users looked...

Belated second sequel Tron: Ares is finally shooting, and it’s been announced that Gillian Anderson has joined the already starry cast.
Because it’s important not to rush these things, Disney has waited well over a decade to make a sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy. That film was itself a sequel to Tron, released in the dim-and-distant year of 1982.
Finally, though, filming appears to have gotten away over the past couple of days, with director Joachim Ronning (Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) posting a teasing image of a Tron 3 chair on the 20th January. It’s the sort of thing filmmakers often do when a film goes into production.
Now, Deadline reports that Gillian Anderson has joined the already starry cast, which includes Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith and Greta Lee. There’s no mention of what role Anderson is taking on or...

Considering it was released at a time when 8-bit video games were the industry standard, Tron was certainly a film that was ahead of its time. Though its $50 million gross made it a box office disappointment at the time, the film has grown over time and achieved cult classic status, spawning one sequel (2010’s Tron: Legacy), a TV show, and talk of another sequel in the works. When he made the original movie, Bruce Boxleitner was a 31-year-old actor with mostly television roles to his credit, so he was happy to be making a movie for Disney, but he never imagined that the film would still be a hit and a topic of discussion more than 40 years later.(Click on the media bar below to hear Bruce Boxleitner) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Bruce-Boxleitner-Celebrates-the-30th-Anniversary-Of-Tron-Copy.mp3

Born Cynthia Ann Cichorski on Sept. 29, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois, Morgan was the first in her family to attend college, attending Northern Illinois University to study communications. After working in local news and radio for some time, she eventually moved to Los Angeles in 1978.

At a time when syndicated science fiction was just Star Trek series, it took some guts on Warner Bros’ part to try something darker and more experimental with J. Michael Straczynski’s Babylon 5, designed to tell a sprawling epic that was more political than it was space opera. The show arrived thirty years ago and was successful enough to spawn spin-off five telefilms and a short-lived spinoff, spanning 1993-2007.
The core of it, the 110 episodes from the original five-season series, have been remastered and collected on a nice Blu-ray box set from Warner Home Entertainment. Also included is the original pilot film.
Set in the 23rd century, the Earth Alliance has found its place among star-faring races, notably the Minbari and the Centauri. Some of these races are fine with humans; others wish them gone. Then there are the Vorlons, and no one knows what they want.

J. Michael Straczynski is back with a new installment in his imaginative Babylon 5 series. The difference this time is that it’s a 76-minute animated feature film, released this week from Warner Home Entertainment.
B5 launched into syndicated television sixteen years ago, featuring a somewhat darker, more nuanced approach to the future. It was filled before and behind the camera with people well-versed in the Sf tropes, but used that to twist things and keep them fresh.
Here, Babylon 5 The Road Home, feels far more familiar. We’re set in the time after the Shadow War as we focus on President John Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner) and his wife Delenn (Rebecca Riedy) adjusting to running the 12-world Interstellar Alliance. Just as he leaves, he’s caught in the tried and true time warp allowing him to visit various parallel realities as we revisit more familiar characters and settings.

It may have taken a long time to get here, but Babylon 5 is finally making the leap to Blu-ray. Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment announced today that all five seasons of the iconic sci-fi series will be released on Blu-ray on December 5th.
Babylon 5 has previously only been available on DVD and the image quality wasn’t always the best, so fans have been waiting for this moment for quite some time. You can check out the official box art for Babylon 5: The Complete Series below, which strangely doesn’t feature the titular space station.
All five seasons of Babylon 5 were scanned and remastered from the original camera negative in 4K, with a colour correction and the cleaning of dirt and scratches as well. The many CGI shots of the series have been digitally upscaled to HD, and short of a complete remaster, that’s probably...

Welcome to the Grid, Evan Peters.

In 1995, we screamed, “Hack the planet!” Today, my mom can watch any movie on her phone. When we walk around with computers in our pockets, fantasies about jacking into cyberspace and accessing vast amounts of information seem quaint, if not outright laughable. But it’s that very mundane nature that makes cyberpunk such an important genre, even in 2023.
The cyberpunk genre began in literature, first in stories published in the UK magazine New Worlds and later in novels from writers such as William Gibson (Neuromancer), J.G. Ballard (High Rise), and Philip K. Dick. These writers took a darker look at the technology of the future, showing how new inventions did nothing to change inequality and corruption, only reinforcing the worst parts of humanity.
For most people, cinematic cyberpunk is synonymous with 1982’s Blade Runner, an adaption of the Dick book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

The woman behind the iconic Susan Ivanova is keeping busy. Not only is Claudia Christian returning to the role for the forthcoming animated movie, Babylon 5: The Road Home, but she’s successfully funded the second issue of her comic-book, Claudia Cristian’s Dark Legacies on Kickstarter.
The comic, which is co-written by Dr. Chris McAuley (Dracula: The Return) and drawn by legendary British artist Glenn Fabry, isn’t Christian’s first foray into fiction. In 2007, Christian wrote the Babylon 5 novel Baptism of Fire, and in 2016, the original novel Wolf's Empire: Gladiator with Morgan Grant Buchanan.

Little House on the Prairie star Melissa Gilbert married Timothy Busfield of Thirtysomething fame back in 2013. For both actors, it was their third marriage. In the Laura Ingalls actor’s latest memoir, Back to the Prairie, she writes about how Busfield is different from her past partners.

Even after the couple’s honeymoon phase, Gilbert “reveled in the respect” her third husband showed her. She knew from the beginning that their love was different from her past relationships. But it seems Busfield was different, too.
“Before Tim, I always felt like I had to make my own abilities and accomplishments smaller to allow the men I was with to feel confident, bigger, macho, and in control,” wrote Gilbert. “Tim was different. Instead of feeling threatened by a strong, outspoken, capable woman, he encouraged me to meet each day fearlessly.

Melissa Gilbert and Timothy Busfield got married in 2013. It was the third marriage for both actors, and they both had children from previous relationships. Blending families can be tricky. The case of Gilbert and Busfield was no exception. The Little House on the Prairie alum initially believed the task would be easier than it ended up being. “Easy” was not how it all went down.

Melissa Gilbert and Timothy Busfield technically met in 1991 at the Emmys. After Melissa Gilbert’s divorce from second husband Bruce Boxleitner, she went through a transformative time. She found herself dating the wrong guy, driving a car she didn’t need, and altering her appearance to appease the never-satisfied Hollywood machine. Then a roof fell on her head and it became crystal clear to her that she needed to make some big changes.

Not long after her divorce from Boxleitner, Gilbert hopped right back on the dating horse. She started seeing someone who wasn’t a good fit for her. She bought a new convertible. And she did what she could to appear younger than she was.
Around that time, she was invited to compete on Dancing With The Stars, an experience she looks back on negatively, calling it “the ultimate spray-tan-glitter-fake-hair-fake-everything festival of falsity.

The Laura Ingalls actor was on DWTS during a time when she was on the cusp of learning who the real Melissa Gilbert is. And, as it turns out, DWTS doesn’t agree with the real Melissa Gilbert.

After Little House on the Prairie star Melissa Gilbert divorced her second husband, Bruce Boxleitner, she quickly started dating someone who, in hindsight, wasn’t good for her. He seemed to have all the bad qualities of every boyfriend she’d ever had, all wrapped up in one person.

After Gilbert and Boxleitner divorced, the Laura Ingalls actor was eager to make up for lost time when it came to dating. At the same time, she was coming to terms with being an actress in Los Angeles in her forties. So she got the Botox, she colored her hair, she bought a convertible, and started dating a “slightly younger but wildly inappropriate French dude.”

She’s hung up her Hollywood heels for a pair of boots she can get dirty in the chicken coop. Her birthday this year fits in perfectly with her new life. “This is heaven,” she said of the day.

Gilbert and her husband Thirtysomething actor Timothy Busfield bought a 14-acre property with a rundown cottage in the Catskills in 2019. We knew something was on its way from Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski but we weren’t expecting this: a new animated movie from Warner Bros. Animation and WB Home Entertainment.
Straczynski described it as: “Classic Babylon 5: raucous, heartfelt, nonstop, a ton of fun through time and space, and a love letter to the fans.”
It might not be as well known as his comic-book work, but Straczynski actually has a background in animation – writing episodes of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, She-Ra: Princess of Power, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, Captain Power, The Real Ghostbusters, and other 1980s action favorites.
We know that Bruce Boxleitner is back – which is also fitting, as he’s got some hefty voice acting chops, reprising his most famous other science fiction role for the 2012 show Tron: Uprising – but we’re going to have to wait another week for more details.
