Two days ago, Dan Marfisi, a longtime musician and songwriter in the L.A. area, received a text from a composer friend. “He wrote, ‘Did you write this song on The X-Files?’” Marfisi says. “He said, ‘You should go to Twitter and check out these threads. You’ll be a hero.’”
Marfisi had no idea what his friend was talking about, but when he went online, he learned that more than a few people have been trying to unearth information about a piece of music he co-wrote 25 years ago — and had barely thought about since.

Few TV shows have had the seismic impact of The X-Files – with its swirling mysteries, long-running conspiracies, and shocking monster-of-the-week episodes. Factor in the legendary roles of Mulder and Scully (the incredible David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) and you have the recipe for a multiple-decade-spanning phenomenon, that began on the small screen, moved to the big one (twice), and was revived for two additional series just when fans thought it was all over. Packed with alien encounters, supernatural shenanigans, and moments of very human horror, the show – spawned by Chris Carter – brought audiences into a world where you never quite knew what the next episode would bring.
30 years later, the impact of The X-Files hasn’t been diluted – and throughout its reign on big screens and small, Empire spoke to several of its key voices. Take a rifle through the X-Files Interview Archive…

“The X-Files,” which starred Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny as two intrepid FBI agents who investigated bizarre and unexplainable cases, debuted on Fox on Sept. 3, 1993.
The sci-fi cult hit from Chris Carter not only had a profound impact on pop culture, but also inspired more women to enter the fields of science and medicine, like Anderson’s character Dana Scully.
The character was largely modeled on Jodie Foster’s Clarice Starling in 1991’s Oscar-winning “Silence of the Lambs,” while the show’s eerie theme song was partly inspired by The Smiths’ “How Soon Is Now?”
In honor of the show’s 30th anniversary, here are some facts you might not know about “The X-Files,” including how integral it is to the existence of “Breaking Bad.”

Composer Mark Snow started his professional music writing career in 1976 with the release of the notorious TV movie "The Boy in the Plastic Bubble," starring a young John Travolta. Paul Williams wrote the theme song for the movie, but it was Snow who composed the incidental music. He was about 29 years old.
Since then, Snow has been a regular presence in the TV world, having written for shows like "Starsky & Hutch," "The Next Step Beyond," "Vega$," "The Love Boat," "Dynasty," "T.J. Hooker," "Pee-wee's Playhouse," and "Dark Justice." Snow's popularity exploded in the popular consciousness in 1993, however, with the debut of Chris Carter's paranormal investigation show "The X-Files."
"The X-Files" was about a pair of FBI agents who operated out of a basement and were given the weird, ghostly, monster-y, alien-related cases no one wanted. Mulder (David Duchovny) was a believer, Scully (Gillian Anderson) was a skeptic. Snow, who...

If great science fiction often inspires a sense of wonder, then “Debris” star Jonathan Tucker is already overwhelmed. Roughly 25 minutes into our phone interview, the ruminative actor mentioned an article he read in The New Yorker about an object in space that’s “moving with a speed and property no one can explain.” As Tucker described the story, his voice got higher and his words tumbled out faster; the thrill of discovery shifted to a big picture curiosity in what it really means.
Given the story, it’s easy to imagine plenty others reacting the same way. The print edition had a simple headline: “Swinging on a Star.” But the online version puts its awe-inspiring question right up top: “Have We Already Been Visited by Aliens?”
“They think it’s a UFO — they genuinely believe it’s a UFO,” Tucker said. “And they call the UFO ‘Oumuamua,’ which is named...

The agency said in a statement, “It is with deepest sorrow that we mourn the passing of our dear friend and colleague Cheryl Tiano. Cheryl was a beloved member of our Gsa family for nearly 30 years… It is impossible to express how deeply we will miss her.”

Cast and creatives of series “The X-Files,” including David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, have reunited virtually to record a special version of the show’s famous theme tune, with fan-written lyrics, to benefit the World Central Kitchen.
“The X-Files” series executive producer Frank Spotnitz’s desire to help the needy during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic saw him devise a challenge for “The X-Files” fans to write bespoke lyrics for the show’s instrumental theme tune. A week after ASCAP gave out its pop awards, the performing rights organization rolled out another round of kudos with the ASCAP Screen Music Awards for composers, announced online Tuesday morning as the kickoff to a two-day online event taking place in lieu of the org’s usual black-tie dinner in Beverly Hills as a result of ongoing quarantining.
Hans Zimmer won the trophy for top box office film for scoring the blockbuster remake of “The Lion King.” In television, the award for most performed themes and underscore went to David Vanacore, whose most-heard work of the year included “Survivor” and “Deal or No Deal.” Siddhartha Khosla, of “This Is Us” fame, won for top network television series.
Although those awards represent acclaim represented in sheer commercial numbers, ASCAP also polls its composer and songwriter members to give out three peer-voted awards. In the Composer’s Choice categories, John Powell...

The Twilight Zone casts a long shadow over today’s film and TV. We salute the legacy left by Rod Serling’s seminal series…
“Damn near immortal” is how Stephen King described The Twilight Zone in his 1981 study of creepy fiction Danse Macabre, and who could argue with that. Like any decent horror monster, Rod Serling’s 1960s anthology series keeps coming back from the grave. Only last week it was announced that CBS is planning to resurrect its award-winning show once again. The new series will be the latest of several revivals over the decades, including an upcoming stage production set to enjoy its world premiere at London’s Almeida Theatre this December.

It’s kind of impressive, the way Netflix continues to find new ways to piss off cinephiles. The latest move: A “Skip Intro” button that allows viewers to blow past the opening credits of a movie. By pressing the Skip Intro feature for “Forrest Gump,” for example, viewers have been spared two minutes of watching a feather delicately drift to earth while Alan Silvestri’s iconic score plays — instead, the film leaps right to “Screenplay by Eric Roth” and Forrest (Tom Hanks) offering up some chocolates.
Many see the introduction of the “Skip Intro” option on films as insidious, another way in which Netflix is compromising the concept of film as an art form. The feature isn’t available across all films — “Schindler’s List,” for example, is unaffected — but the complaint is a fair one. The opening credits are an opportunity for a filmmaker to set the scene for his or her work,...

Two decades ago, X-Files composer Mark Snow produced a compilation dubbed Songs in the Key of X: Music From and Inspired by the X-Files that included tunes by Nick Cave, Elvis Costello, P.M. It also contained a cover of Gary Numan's echoey, new-wavey "Down in the Park" by some alt-rock upstarts calling themselves Foo Fighters, whose frontman was an X-Files megafan. The X-Files returns to television on Sunday night, a boon for all of us still carrying the torch for the series (and a torch for either lead agent). Like Breaking Bad, Mad Men or any of the other finely detailed shows of the current era of great television, The X-Files has fans whose obsession with the show borders on that of David Duchovny's Agent Fox Mulder. For those of you still seeking the truth, there’s no better place to start than at the beginning. So before jumping into Fox’s upcoming reboot of The X-Files, refresh your memory of the entire groundbreaking mythology, all nine seasons of which are now available for the first time on Blu-ray.

I watched a brand-new episode of "The X-Files" last night, which is a strange sentence to be typing in 2015. But it's true! I really did. Welcome to the era of the TV revival. (Note: You can check out a brand-new promo and key art for the series at the bottom of this article.) Without giving any spoilers, here is what I will tell you: if you were a fan of the old "X-Files," you're probably going to like the new "X-Files" just fine. The first episode feels familiar, comforting even -- like a Friday night circa 1993, eating Doritos on the living room couch. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny slip back into their old rhythms smoothly, easily, winningly. Mulder hasn't lost that sleepy twinkle. Scully is still powerless to resist it. There are aliens. There are abductions. There are government conspiracies, perhaps even bleaker and more complex than the old ones.

Non-Stop
Composed by John Ottman
Varese Sarabande Records
The latest entry in Liam Neeson’s Career Resurgence Extravaganza, Non-Stop has Neeson’s alcoholic air marshal Bill Marks unravel a mysterious bomb threat aboard a flight from New York to London. (Said flight is, in fact, non-stop.) When it’s not withholding key pieces of its mystery, Jaume Collet-Serra’s thriller is both tense and supremely silly — imagine Flightplan’s laser focus on its central character with Speed’s one-upsmanship.
Having previously scored Collet-Serra’s Unknown (also starring Neeson), John Ottman’s no stranger to genre. From Eight-Legged Freaks to Gothika, he’s also scored nearly all of Bryan Singer’s films since the early days of Public Access. His work in Singer’s ill-fated Superman Returns is a standout highlight, showing a deep reverence for John Williams’ importance to the original’s iconography. If I’ve learned one thing from this re-watch of season 9 of The X-Files it’s this, I really love John Doggett. His character brings so much to the series that without him, I can’t help but feel as though this final season would have been even worse. Of course it’s only appropriate that they would give him his own episode to wrap up the most important Doggett storyline…the death of his son Luke.
The death of Doggett’s son prior to him joining of the FBI was the source of his anger and desire for justice, similar to the abduction of Mulder’s sister being the source of his search for truth. Some might say Doggett’s story is a little too close to that but I don’t think so, his is a different kind of drive and Robert Patrick never fails to sell us on Doggett’s grief.

On Sept. 10, 1993, a show called "The X-Files" premiered on Fox, and just over 20 years later "Breaking Bad" will air its series finale on AMC. Those events have a lot more in common than you might think.
Vince Gilligan, the creator of "Breaking Bad," got his start in television by writing for "The X-Files." He was toiling away as a film writer and living in Virginia when a meeting with "X-Files" creator Chris Carter changed his life.
"I learned everything I pretty much know about TV from 'The X-Files' and from working for Chris, and from working with ['X-Files writer/producers] Frank Spotnitz and John Shiban," Gilligan said in a phone interview with The Huffington Post. "It was a great learning experience, and one that I always liken to film school, except it was a film school that paid me to attend."

We count down 15 atmospheric modern TV titles sequences of the last 10 years, from big hits like Game Of Thrones to Dexter and more...
What makes a great title sequence? There are numerous shows with fantastic theme songs (Red Dwarf), evolving sequences (Fringe), handy introductions to the show (Once Upon A Time) or humour (Futurama). But for a truly great title sequence, all these things have to come together with an added splash of sheer invention and creativity, resulting in a sequence that perfectly expresses the spirit of the show (preferably without inducing headaches or nausea – Homeland has a brilliantly inventive title sequence that, unfortunately, can be physically uncomfortable to watch). Any sequence that simply shows clips of the actors in character, no matter how well acted or artistically put together, will not make the cut here.

I have often wondered if Person of Interest (TV) would bring back former Numbers to help their benefactors on Team Finch/Reese. Well, it seems like old numbers *can*crop back up, even if Reese (James Caviezel) doesn’t seem to like it. And Leon Tao (Ken Leung) isn’t the only blast-from-the-past we see either. Maybe Reese thinks that once he save a Number, they either see the error of their ways, or simply figure out how to be safer with their decision making, but it’s clear he figures that he comes into and out of their lives like a ghost and they’re all the better for it. Well, usually. It seems that our little forensic accountant Leon, who pissed off the Arian Brotherhood a while back, didn’t get the memo. He’s pissed off the Russians this time and Reese saves his bacon yet again.

Sometimes you just gotta get out of the city. Unfortunately, Reese (James Caviezel) wasn’t made for the Girl Scout cookie and soccer mom/dad lifestyle. Neither is the ultra-trendy, mega stylish Zoe Morgan (Paige Turco), his impromptu wife. While this case wasn’t as explosive as most, there was an undercurrent of connection, shown through flashbacks to the Machine’s early days with Finch (Michael Emerson) and Nathan Ingram (Brett Cullen). Perhaps that connection is “everyone meets for a reason.” Also, Bear the dog licks donut icing and Finch is just evil enough to let Reese eat it which is probably the funniest scene of the episode right there. In the latest Number’s case, meeting his wife meant getting out of his old safe-cracking lifestyle. Graham Wyler seems like the all American dad; lovely wife and teen daughter and a big old slice of American pie on the side.

One of the many things I love about this show is character continuity. Emotional or physical things that happen to a character in one episode follow through to episodes that follow. Reese (James Caviezel) didn’t magically heal one week after getting shot and Mr. Finch (Michael Emerson) isn’t going to recover from his little romp with Root any time soon either. The emotional trauma is there and we get to actually see him dealing with it, and it’s fabulous. The Number of the week isn’t too remarkable but it does lead itself to a few nice moments for Reese to talk about being “lost and found” (by Finch) and we always enjoy those. Sophia (Paloma Guzman) the spoiled brat of a Brazilian diplomat has a hit out on her after she conveniently finds herself the wrong kind of boyfriend. And maybe freakishly tall Sophia is just a misunderstood,...

This episode was jammed packed with suspense and backstory, which as a fan, is just the kind of meat I love to sink my teeth into. The newest Number proves to bring back some memories for Reese (James Caviezel) when he was a fledgling CIA agent, things he'd probably love to forget, but we are treated to some juicy, character driven flashbacks in the process. But Reese isn't the only one having a tough time of it, as we see Fusco (Kevin Chapman) caught between a rock and hard place. Just when I think the show can't get any better! The newest Number, Cahill (Michael Aronov) might seem like a simple case until Reese discovers that Cahill is hooked up with some pretty shady characters. Okay, so Cahill is a bad guy, right? It sure seems that way as Cahill's crew, led by a guy named Vargas (Jose Zuniga) meets...

Varese Sarabande has announced the newest titles in their CD Club series. Among the new releases is a deluxe edition of Marco Beltrami‘s score for Wes Craven’s original Scream film. Only about 12 minutes of music from the horror movie has previously been released on a compilation with the sequel’s score. The new album features more than an hour of music from the film, which introduced Beltrami to a wider audience. One track on the CD is credited to Christophe Beck, who also was just starting out at the time of the film’s release. The album is limited to 2000 copies and is now available to pre-order on Varese’s website, where you can see the full track list and listen to audio clips from the soundtrack. Scream was released in 1996 and it’s cast included Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich, Jamie Kennedy and Drew Barrymore.

The release coincides with the two-hour Smallville series finale broadcast, airing Friday, May 13, at 8/7c on The CW. As Smallville concludes its 10th and final season chronicling a young Clark Kent's journey toward becoming Superman, it holds the record for the longest consecutive-running science fiction series in U.S. television history. On a weekly basis, the score to Smallville was composed as each episode was being produced. This scoring schedule provided the composers with the flexibility to alter the musical themes throughout the series to reflect the growing maturity of Clark Kent - from a freshman at Smallville High to a reporter at The Daily Planet. Mark Snow is an Ascap Award-winning songwriter who composed the score for the first six seasons of Smallville and has written music for The X-Files, Millennium, One Tree Hill, Starsky & Hutch and many more. 9 is the Tim Burton-produced feature version of the Oscar-nominated short film. It tells the story of an apocalyptic future where burlap sack dolls hold the last essence of humanity and must stay ahead of giant mechanical creatures seeking to destroy them. The 9 movie soundtrack is credited to Danny Elfman and Deborah Lurie, but while Elfman created the themes (see ‘Burial’ and ‘Winged Beast’) it’s young composer Lurie who’s responsible for everything else. 9 is her chance to shine, after ten years behind the scenes providing additional music for the likes of Spider-Man 3 and Wanted, heading up smaller films, and orchestrating /arranging for composing giants John Ottman, Mark Snow and Elfman.
The 9 soundtrack is primarily an action score, and Lurie brings the large-scale orchestral sound of Spider-Man and Wanted to an animated movie, somewhere it’s not typically found. ‘Winged Beast’ and ‘Slaying the Beast’ in particular are epic battle themes,...

Ghost Whisperer banks on the viewer's belief in the redemptive power of good deeds and the talent of the busty Jennifer Love Hewitt. If four seasons down with a fifth one under way is any indication, the series has a definite following. And, considering the test of loyalty the fourth season poses to its fans, the fact that it didn't spin out and lose its fans after killing off one its main characters says a lot for the show's future. Either way, what you get when you tune in to Ghost Whisperer falls somewhere in between Dead Like Me and the 2008 film Ghost Town: a woman can converse with ghosts and help them complete their "unfinished business" (thanks Casper) so they can pass into the Light (a blatant representation of heaven).

Being unfamiliar with "The Incident," the novel by Christian Gailly on which "Wild Grass" is based, I like to imagine it this fine-boned, New Yorkeresque tale of lonely Parisians brought together by coincidence. If that's the case, Alain Resnais' high-strung film is something like happens when you get that story drunk and it lurches around the house, knocking things over and hitting on your host's wife. In the New York Film Festival's opening night selection, mad flourishes are daubed all over moments that don't seem like they demand any particular emphasis, peculiarities abound and characters ramp up to and back away from emotional heights at perilous speeds.
The incident in question is a minor one that brings into contact two strangers, but the connection catches and holds, leading to a bemusing love affair. Marguerite Muir (Sabine Azéma), a dentist whose passion is aviation, has her purse stolen when out shoe shopping,...
