AMC must be feeling pretty good about getting into bed with Netflix right about now. Thanks to a deal between the two, several AMC shows hit the streaming platform on August 19, 2024, and almost immediately began climbing the Netflix charts. It's a gratifying turn of events for the AMC faithful who've been tuning into the network for years, only to see their favorites overshadowed time and again by bigger productions on HBO or Showtime.
The underseen Western crime drama "Dark Winds," for instance, has now found a whole new audience thanks to this agreement. Meanwhile, it appears a lot of people have only just learned that "Kevin Can F*** Himself" -- the critically-acclaimed dark meta-sitcom starring Alexis Rose herself, aka "Schitt's Creek" alum Annie Murphy -- even exists thanks to its premiere on Netflix. According to viewership aggregator FlixPatrol, "Dark Winds" has even become the third-most streamed show of the last...

Executive producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have reunited for a third historical mini-series, this time taking to the skies with Apple TV+’s “Masters of the Air.” The series follows the members of the 100th Bomb Group, a Boeing B-17 heavy bomber unit that operated in the Air Force during WWII. This isn’t Hanks and Spielberg’s first war-time series, however. They previously executive produced “The Pacific,” which charted the US Marine Corps’ actions in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Before that, they created “Band of Brothers,” which dramatized the story of the Easy Company of the US Army, who went on a mission in Europe during WWII.
“Masters of the Air” looks to be a major Emmys player this year, particularly as it stars popular actors Callum Turner, Austin Butler, and Barry Keoghan. However, before we look ahead at that series’ Emmy potential, lets look back at...

It's been almost a year since we last saw Alexandra Daddario as Rowan Fielding in the Mayfair Witches, but Season 2 is coming.
Mayfair Witches Season 1 ended with some bombshell moments, from Rowan's father's identity being uncovered to the birth of Rowan's child, and ultimately, the powerful line, "You can't control me," which resonates with all of Rowan's character.
This exciting story will continue in Mayfair Witches Season 2 as we follow Rowan and Lasher (Jack Huston) in their next journey together, and it's going to be one for the books. That is if it's anything like the second book in Anne Rice's series.
There are also some new faces joining the cast, so let's dive in and see what Season 2 has in store for us.

“Cat Person,” the latest film from director Susanna Fogel, tells the story of a young woman (“Coda” breakout Emilia Jones) who engages in a relationship with an older man (Nicholas Braun) that might be dangerous. It’s story of the sticky dynamics between men and women in relationships is drawing commonalities to Netflix’s recent feature, Chloe Domont’s “Fair Play.”
But Fogel isn’t worried about the comparisons that risk overshadowing her film. In fact, she welcomes the connection as an opportunity to have a long overdue conversation about marginalized storytellers.
“We’re overdue to have these stories,” she told TheWrap. “We’re overdue to have many of them.”
As the director explained, there are several films about male/female power dynamics helmed by male directors or stories centered on men.

Cat Person was previously reviewed at Sundance 2023.
Plot: A college student (Emilia Jones) becomes infatuated with an older man (Nicholas Braun) who frequents the theater she works at.
Review: For those not in the know, Cat Person is based on a New Yorker article that went viral a few years ago. It described, in excruciating detail, the relationship between a 20-year-old college girl and a thirty-something man she had a brief relationship with. The film, adapted by writer Michelle Ashford of Masters of Sex and director Susanna Fogel, embellishes the already fictional story with a third-act twist, but do a good job translating the story to film. The result is a fresh, uncomfortable and often legitimately funny take on a provocative subject.
Power dynamics in relationships are discussed now more than they used to be, even compared to when the article was published in 2017. Nowadays, everyone would look askew at...

Kristen Roupenian’s New Yorker story about a date gone horribly awry lit a short-lived fire of discourse surrounding gender and power dynamics. Five years later its big screen adaptation arrived, as adapted by Michelle Ashford and directed by Susanna Fogel (The Spy Who Dumped Me). Led by Emilia Jones and Nicholas Braun, the film premiered at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to a tepid response, leading to difficulty securing quick distribution. Some seven months later, it’s now been announced Rialto Pictures will release it in the U.S. on October 6 and now the first trailer has arrived.
I said in my review, “Jones helps elevate the material: her uneasy glances are often more effective than any of the dialogue. Braun, operating in a different, more foreboding register than cousin Greg, handles his character’s emblem of male toxicity with aplomb, particularly in the awkwardly humorous ways his aloofness ignores Margot’s feelings,...

Emilia Jones (Coda) and Nicholas Braun (Succession) do not appear to be a match made in heaven in the first trailer for Cat Person.
Set for release Oct. 6 from Rialto Pictures, director Susanna Fogel’s feature premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival and is adapted from author Kristen Roupenian’s viral New Yorker short story of the same name. Cat Person offers a look at contemporary dating by focusing on college student Margot (Jones), who has a fling with an older man named Robert (Braun) but soon gets suspicious about him.
After Margot expresses regrets about her time spent with Robert — who had previously described himself as a cat person — her friend Taylor (Geraldine Viswanathan) asks if at least his pet felines were cute. “I never saw them,” Margot replies ominously as she begins to doubt how honest he’s been.

In “Cat Person,” Emilia Jones (“Coda”) plays Margot, who starts to date an older man (“Succession” star Nicholas Braun) before discovering something much more sinister lurking beneath the surface. Geraldine Viswanathan, Hope Davis, Michael Gandolfini, Liza Koshy, Fred Melamed, Isaac Cole Powell and Isabella Rossellini also star in the thriller.
“Cat Person” was written by Michelle Ashford and directed by Susanna Fogel, who cowrote “Booksmart” and directed “The Spy Who Dumped Me” along with episodes of “Amazing Stories,” “The Flight Attendant,” “Utopia” (where she worked with Jones) and “A Small Light.”

Cat Person, the viral New Yorker short story/culture war litmus test-turned-feature film, has finally gotten a first trailer ahead of its Oct. 6 release.
The film stars Emilia Jones as Margot, a 20-year-old college sophomore who meets the slightly older Robert (Nicholas Braun, a.k.a. Cousin Greg from Succession) while working an otherwise dull job at a movie theater. The pair strike up a bit of a fling — but the red flags immediately start flying: Robert can’t kiss, the sex is awful, and weirdest of all, he claimed to have cats,...

The folks at Studiocanal and Rialto Pictures have released a trailer, as well as the release date, for "Cat Person." The movie is based on Kristen Roupenians' 2017 short story of the same name that was published in The New Yorker, and features Emilia Jones from the Best Picture winner "Coda" having the hook-up from hell with Nicholas Braun, aka cousin Greg from "Succession." Bad hook-ups are common in the age of internet dating, sure, but in this case, things go from bad to downright scary.
Susanna Fogel directed the film, with Michelle Ashford ("Masters of Sex") penning the screenplay. The adaptation of the short story is due to hit theaters in October and figures to be a conversation starter as part of the fall moviegoing season. Let's roll the trailer.

The highly-anticipated film “Cat Person” purrs into theaters soon courtesy of Rialto Pictures.
“Cat Person,” which was among IndieWire’s most anticipated films out of Sundance, received distribution later than expected, leaving fans waiting for the big screen adaptation of the viral New Yorker short story of the same name.
“Coda” breakout star Emilia Jones plays college sophomore Margot who meets awkward bachelor Robert (Nicholas Braun) while working at a movie theater concession stand. However, Robert may not be as he seems: For one thing, as a self-described cat owner, there are no furry felines to be found in his apartment. Did Robert lie about having cats to seem non-threatening? Is Robert really a villain, or is Margot paranoid thanks to dating horror stories?
Geraldine Viswanathan and Isabella Rossellini also star in the twisty rom-com meets thriller.

After world premiering to much buzz at Sundance back in January, the darkly comedic dating thriller Cat Person has finally unveiled a first trailer and release date, having been set to open in U.S. theaters via Rialto Pictures beginning October 6th.
An adaptation of Kristen Roupenian’s viral New Yorker short story fully financed by Studiocanal, Cat Person looks at the brief relationship between 20-year-old college sophomore Margot (Coda‘s Emilia Jones) and the somewhat-older Robert (Succession‘s Nicholas Braun) from the perspective of both characters, as a means of commenting on the experience of dating today.
In an appearance alongside her leads at Deadline’s Sundance studio earlier this year, pic’s DGA Award-winning director Susanna Fogel noted that the idea of toggling back and forth between the POVs of her protagonists was compelling, in that it allowed her to explore “miscommunications and the cultural baggage that men and women bring into dating,...

“Cat Person,” which launched with a bang at Sundance, will be released in theaters on Oct. 6 through Rialto Pictures.
The wild thriller — which stars Emilia Jones (“Coda”) and Nicholas Braun (“Succession”) as a couple whose signals cross, leading to disturbing interactions — made its world premiere to a huge response at the festival in January.
Susanna Fogel directed the polarizing film, which is based on Kristen Roupenian’s short story of the same name in The New Yorker that went viral following its publication in 2017, becoming the magazine’s most-read piece of fiction ever.
Michelle Ashford wrote the screenplay. In his review for Variety, Peter Debruge called it “wickedly ambiguous Sundance conversation-starter.” Still, some fans of the short story have expressed outrage that the film includes a third act that is not reflected in the source material.

Anne Rice’s biggest claim to fame will always be “Interview With the Vampire” and the ensuing Vampire Chronicles. However, most casual horror fans don’t know that her impressive catalog also features a multigenerational saga about a family of witches. Beginning with “The Witching Hour,” Rice wrote a trilogy of novels following a matrilineal line of magical women. AMC’s Mayfair Witches brings this saga to the fore with a star-studded adaptation of Rice’s dense source material. Alexandra Daddario stars as Rowan Fielding, a California brain surgeon and the 13th Mayfair witch who was whisked away at birth and knows nothing of her family’s occult history. Annabeth Gish is her mother Dierdre, an unfortunate prisoner in the family’s New Orleans home, and Jack Huston is the mysterious Lasher, a demonic presence haunting the women of the Mayfair line.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “What Rough Beast,” the Season 1 finale of “Mayfair Witches,” now streaming on AMC+.
In the season premiere of AMC’s “Mayfair Witches,” Rowan Fielding (Alexandra Daddario) was a San Francisco-dwelling neurosurgeon too preoccupied with her own self-destructive tendencies to care about a world of magic.
By Sunday’s season finale, she is a powerful witch, an ascending family matriarch and –– in the biggest turn of events –– a new mother to a baby she conceived days prior that is now possessed by her demonic lover.
“Mayfair Witches” is the second series in AMC’s Immortal Universe, an interconnected world of stories conjured from the acquired works of Anne Rice. It follows last fall’s “Interview With the Vampire,” which executive producer Mark Johnson tells Variety will begin shooting its second season in April in Europe.
The two series won’t be alone in the universe for long.

Jonathan Majors is quickly becoming one of the busiest actors in Hollywood. In addition to returning as Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania this weekend, he’ll square off against Michael B. Jordan in Creed III on March 3. As if that’s not enough, Majors plays Killian Maddox in Magazine Dreams, a buzz-worthy film recently picked up by Searchlight Pictures after its Sundance Film Festival premiere.
While everything is coming up Milhouse for Majors and Magazine Dreams, the same cannot be said about director Susanna Fogel’s Cat Person, which is going through hard times on its way to distribution. According to Puck, an email sent by agents Hildy Gottlieb and Brian Siberell of CAA, which represents Coda star Emilia Jones and screenwriter Michelle Ashford, there are “deep concerns” about a Netflix offer for the U.S. rights to the film. At a time when TV shows are being cancelled left and right, it’s always nice to report that one has been renewed. AMC is all-in on their small screen Anne Rice Universe, and we’ve learned this morning that “Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches” has just been renewed for Season 2.
The brand new series is an adaptation of Anne Rice’s novels in the “Mayfair Witches” saga, and it premiered January 8 on AMC and AMC+.
AMC’s “Interview with the Vampire” was also recently renewed for a second season.
“The success of both Mayfair Witches and Interview with the Vampire once again illustrates the strength and mastery of Anne Rice’s work,” said AMC’s Mark Johnson. “The fact that these first two shows are performing so splendidly with a TV audience gives us much pride in what we’ve already done and great anticipation for the storytelling opportunities yet to come.

The Anne Rice universe at AMC continues to expand. Today we found out that the network has officially greenlit the second season of "Mayfair Witches," the show based on the books by author Anne Rice. The television series centers around Rowan (Alexandra Daddario), a surgeon who becomes drawn to New Orleans after her adoptive mother dies, who finds out that she's part of a long line of witches who are intertwined with a mysterious, supernatural being named Lasher (John Huston).
"Mayfair Witches" is the second AMC Network show based on Anne Rice's work. The first series adaptation was "Interview With The Vampire," which had its first episode drop just a couple of months before "Mayfair." While "Mayfair Witches" wasn't as critically well-received as "Interview With The Vampire," the execs at AMC are apparently happy enough with it to give it at least one more season. Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches is set to fly again after being renewed for a second season at AMC.
The cable network is bringing back the series, which along with Interview with a Vampire is part of its extended Anne Rice universe, after becoming its number one new series premiere on its streaming service AMC+.
This comes despite a plethora of recent cancelations at AMC Networks. The company pulled Demascus and Invitation to a Bonfire as well as second seasons of Pantheon, Moonhaven and 61st Street, which were in various stages of completion and production, as part of a major cost-cutting drive.

Nobody wants ambivalence in a relationship - but in a movie setting, it can be good. Someone should have told Michelle Ashford this before she tried to contrive an involved ending for this adaptation of Kristen Roupenian’s short story from The New Yorker.
That original tale - which charts, from a young woman’s perspective, what happens to her on a depressingly grim date - leaves its options hanging in the air allowing for interpretation, whereas the film, in the end, wants to nail on some certainty.

The world of dating can be treacherous and filled with dread, not even including the process of online dating. Director Susanna Fogel‘s Cat Person brings Kristen Roupenian’s short story to life from a screenplay written by Michelle Ashford. Unfortunately, it should have remained in its original medium, as the film adaptation is a hapless trudge that never finds its rhythm.

The talk of the internet in late 2017, Kristen Roupenian’s New Yorker story about a date gone horribly awry lit a short-lived fire of discourse surrounding gender and power dynamics. About five years later does the big-screen adaptation arrive, and while it expands details of the original text in a few compelling ways, its new third-act addition calamitously renders the whole experience a pointless, heavy-handed, misjudged exercise that relies heavier on horror tropes than any sense of humanity.
As adapted by Michelle Ashford and directed by Susanna Fogel (The Spy Who Dumped Me), the approach is one of constant terror, conveying college student Margot’s (Emilia Jones) experience of getting to know the decade-plus-older Robert (Nicholas Braun) as one where she envisions the worst possible outcome at every turn. First meeting when he patronizes the movie-theater concession stand where she works, the two exchange numbers and begin a flirtatious texting...

Cat Person opens with the Margaret Atwood quote, “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them.” It cuts to the heart of Kristen Roupenian’s short story adaptation in clashing thematic intent and tones. Playing as a romantic dramedy that frequently spills over into psychological horror, the warring ideas and genres result in a disjointed, bizarre, and often cringe-inducing exploration of the modern dating world.
Twenty-year-old Margot (Emilia Jones) is a sophomore in college living away from home and working a part-time gig at the concession stand of a local theater that regularly plays repertory horror. There, she meets frequent patron Robert (Nicholas Braun) and strikes up an awkward flirtation over Red Vines. That uncomfortable flirtation becomes clear to outside observers that the much older Robert most likely isn’t a suitable match for Margot. Still, the young woman forges ahead,...

"Mayfair Witches," the new AMC+ series based on the book trilogy "Lives of the Mayfair Witches" by Anne Rice, has been looking well outside the realm of supernatural TV dramas for inspiration in season 1. You wouldn't necessarily expect to hear showrunner Esta Spalding and executive producer Michelle Ashford namecheck a 1999 Gulf War movie, but that's exactly what they did in Vanessa Armstrong's /Film interview with the duo.
"Mayfair Witches" stars Alexandra Daddario as Dr. Rowan Mayfair, a neurosurgeon who uncovers her own family link to a dynasty of witches. She's unaware of her powers at first, and this leads to her looking inside people's brains and "popping arteries like bubble gum," as Danielle Ryan put it in her "Mayfair Witches" review. No need for an endoscopy when you have a witch on the case who can show the audience what a person's dying body looks like inside.

This post contains spoilers for the first three episodes of "Mayfair Witches."
"Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches" is AMC's second installment in what they hope will be an expanding Anne Rice universe. The story follows a surgeon named Rowan (Alexandria Daddario) who finds out she's actually from a multi-generational family of witches, with the first season adapting "The Witching Hour," Anne Rice's thousand-page first novel in her "Lives of the Mayfair Witches" series.
Converting such a long book into eight episodes is no small feat, and when I talked with "Mayfair Witches" showrunner Esta Spalding during the Television Critics Association winter press tour, she acknowledged that not everything in the first book made it into the season. "We had a whiteboard that was the greatest hits that we had to use, and of course we couldn't use them all," she told me.
There are, however, a lot of memorable moments...

Based on one of the most sensational and much-discussed short stories of recent times, which was heralded as the most-read story ever to appear in the New Yorker, Cat Person is a disarmingly creepy film with a disturbing edge that will surely trigger further discussion about contemporary dating and romantic protocols. Years ago, a little film like this would have found a modest but loyal following among young audiences. Now, however, its forthright presentation of the pitfalls of flashing yellow lights where male-female relations are concerned should make this a must-see and a subject of hot discussion at least among teens and young adults.
The modest scale and non-big-star cast in the film that just debuted at the Sundance Film Festival present a significant plus going in, as more famous names would have tilted the scale in a misleading direction concerning audience expectations. Michelle Ashford, the creator and main writer...
