The cast and crew of A Christmas Horror Story have stuffed the cinematic stockings with a delightfully devious new take on the holiday season. With A Christmas Horror Story now out in select theaters and viewable on VOD and iTunes, Daily Dead caught up with Steve Hoban—one of the film's three directors—to discuss working with William Shatner, setting the horror anthology film in the same town from the Ginger Snaps movies, and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to converse with Daily Dead today. I really enjoyed A Christmas Horror Story and believe it will become a holiday cult classic that horror fans can happily unwrap each year. How did you get involved with this project and what appealed to you the most after reading the script for the first time?

There are a few Christmas, or holiday, themed horror anthologies in the works. Kevin Smith is tinkering around with one about Krampus, as previously reported. Now, producers Steven Hoban and Mark Smith (Ginger Snaps, Haunter, Splice). Hoban will direct a segment, as will Grant Harvey of Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning and Brett Sullivan (Orphan Black). Doug Taylor, Sarah Larsen, James Kee and Pascal Trottier are scripting four "interweaving tales." It sounds like we're going to get the Trick 'r Treat treatment applied to Christmas...

Despite not being nominated for Best Director, Louise Archambault’s Gabrielle managed to pull off what we thought was the impossible (our Leora Heilbronn has pegged the drama as the film that should win, but favored Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy as the best bet) winning Best Motion Picture at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards (a.k.a Canadian Oscars). If the out of synch supposed “live” telecast wasn’t bad enough (all awards including the winning film were announced almost one hour prior to on twittersphere), the show’s producers gave Gabrielle winning producers Luc Déry and Kim McCraw the equivalent of end of toilette paper roll in terms of time.
The voters also choose Gabrielle‘s Gabrielle Marion-Rivard as Best Actress in a Leading Role, while the heavily favored Enemy grabbed five awards, Best Direction for Villeneuve, Best Original Score for the excellent Danny Bensi/Saunder Jurriaans pairing , Best Editing,...

From Blood and Donuts and Ginger Snaps to Splice and, his latest, Haunter, producer Steve Hoban has been a staple in the Canadian horror scene since the mid Nineties.
He’s now working again with director Vincenzo Natali on a new experimental web series called Darknet that should be making its way onto television here in the States in the near future. For now, as of 12:01am this morning, fans can watch the first installment over at Darknetfiles.com. And, believe me, it’s worth checking out. Consisting of interweaving storylines and connected characters in different instances of urban horror, the first episode runs about 25 minutes and features some really solid, well-crafted moments. Just before the debut, Hoban was kind of enough to speak with us for a few minutes to talk about the series.

Here are a few interesting and/or noteworthy projects that were recently added to IMDbPro's database of development titles:
Between Us – Actor-producer, Omar Epps, has written this script about a pair of friends in pursuit of love. He will team up with producer Tracey E. Edmonds to develop the project along with his BrooklynWorks production company. It's currently out to directors.
The Secret Evidence – Emma Thompson is set to reprise her character, Gareth Peirce, from the 1993 Irish film In the Name of the Father in this drama from Nicholas Racz. Filming is expected to begin later this year.
Triplets – If the one thing you thought was missing from the 1988 Arnold Schwarzenegger-Danny DeVito comedy Twins was Eddie Murphy, then you're in luck. The trio is joining forces with Ivan Reitman (director of the original movie, but only currently attached to produce the sequel) to develop the comedy, which would include Murphy as one of their long-lost siblings.
Haunter – Abigail Breslin stars in this Canadian thriller about a haunted house for Copperheart Entertainment producers, Steven Hoban and Mark Smith. Vincenzo Natali's on board to direct.
On Beauty – Actor-writer-director Kasi Lemmons (Talk to Me, Eve's Bayou) writes and directs this indie project that revolves around a pair of intertwined families. Carol Polakoff produces with Ruby Films' Alison Owen and Paul Trijbits.
If you know of something in the works, please consider submitting it for listing it via our online submission form.

Although it divided audiences and failed to make much noise at the box office, the twisted genetic engineering thriller Splice gave Canadian director Vincenzo Natali far more exposure than any of his previous films to date. As a result, he had been fielding plenty of offers for his follow-up project, and it was looking like his career was finally about to take off. Unfortunately, for some reason, all of the projects he has been attaching himself to seem to be stalling out including adaptations of both William Gibson's Neuromancer and J.G. Ballard's High-Rise. While it's unclear what is happening with those movies, he is now setting up a new horror flick as his next directorial gig. The movie is called Haunter, and it will star Abigail Breslin (Zombieland, Little Miss Sunshine). According to Variety, the movie is a "reverse ghost story" that follows a teenage girl who was...

Just two weeks after signing on to star opposite Halle Berry in Brad Anderson's thriller The Hive, Variety reports that Zombieland's Abigail Breslin has agreed to topline Copperheart Entertainment's Haunter, a supernatural mystery that Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Splice) will direct from a script by Brian King. Bloody Disgusting exclusively broke the news on the film back in January. A reverse ghost story, " 'Haunter' follows Lisa (Breslin), a teenage girl who died under sinister circumstances in 1986 along with her family. Trapped in their house together and unable to move on, Lisa must reach out from beyond the grave to help her present-day, living counterpart avoid the same fate she suffered." Steve Hoban and Mark Smith will produce for Copperheart, which previously produced Natali's 2009 horror pic Splice. Production is skedded to start mid-April in Toronto.

Nick Stahl is best known for his roles in Terminator 3 as John Connor, and as the lead character in HBO's incredible unfinished TV series Carnivale. HBO... I would really love to see the rest of that story, and how it all ends! You totally left us hanging!
Stahl really hasn't done a lot since the show, and I'm not sure why, he's a talented actor. It's been announced that that he will be taking on the lead role in a new film being produced by Splice director Vincenzo Natali. The thriller is called 388 Arletta Ave., and it will be written and directed by Randall Cole.
Here is a description of the film from the director:
(The film) Plays with the notion that if you could scratch to beneath the surface of what most supposedly ordinary people present to the world, and even to themselves, you would find very interesting and possibly very dark things.

Chris Landreth's animated short "The Spine," produced by the National Film Board of Canada in association with Copperheart Animation and C.O.R.E. Digital Pictures, was honored with the Best of the Festival award at the 2009 Melbourne International Animated Festival on Sunday.
Landreth's 2004 film "Ryan," won the same award, the fest's highest honor, at the 2005 Melbourne Festival. "Ryan" subsequently went on to win the best animated short Oscar.
"The Spine" concerned a couple, married for 26 years, unhappily attending a group counseling session.
It reteams Landreth with "Ryan" producers Steve Hoban and Mark Smith, both of Copperheart Animation, and Marcy Page of the National Film Board of Canada.
