After one of the most impressive winning streaks in Hollywood history, Pixar has seen its fortunes reversed in recent years, with last year’s flop Lightyear and a pandemic-era policy of sending its features straight to streaming at Disney+. Now, Pixar faces a major test of brand strength as it prepares to unveil Elemental, its first original theatrical feature since Covid-19 hit.
Directed by Peter Sohn, the film is based on an original story set in a world where fire, water, earth and air residents live together. Among early reviews, the title has an underwhelming 64 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a low number for Pixar. Additionally, the movie is tracking to soft numbers, just $37 million to $38 million over the June 16-18 opening weekend, which it shares with Warner Bros.’ The Flash. Only a handful of Disney’s releases have debuted to less than $50 million. (There were plenty of negative...

As Asian Pacific American Heritage Month kicks off, Gold House has unveiled this year’s A100, the Api leadership coalition’s sixth annual list of the Asian Pacific leaders who have most significantly impacted American culture and society in the last year.
Among the five categories included in the list — activism and journalism; business and technology; entertainment and media; lifestyle and fashion; and sports and gaming — one person tops each category as an overall A1 (maximum impact).
“Gold House’s A100 List is a vital representation of the diverse opportunities and achievements of and for Asian Pacific leaders,” said Michelle Yeoh, a Gold House A100 Hall of Famer and inaugural Gold Gala Honoree last year. “Becoming begins with seeing — and it shows how we’re just getting started. The diversity of animated features — both content and assembly — continues to evolve in lockstep with filmmaking technology’s almost daily leaps and bounds. This ever-changing landscape creates new challenges and opportunities for directors to tell stories that encapsulate everything from epic blockbuster spectacles to personal, relationship-driven dramas.
“Animation is such a powerful medium in exploring complicated themes in an easily accessible way,” says Pixar director Domee Shi, whose “Turning Red” tells the coming-of-age story of Mei, a 13-year-old girl in 2000s-era Toronto, who turns into a giant red panda at the onset of puberty. “I think animation also almost tricks the audience into believing magical logic a little bit more, because it’s already an abstracted version of reality.”
In a process that took more than four years, Shi utilized some of the industry’s most cutting-edge technologies to progressively expand her team of collaborators, from two co-writers (Sarah Streicher...

“I was thinking how my favorite parts are my least favorite parts simultaneously,” says “Turning Red” writer Julia Cho about the creative process. “My favorite part is when I’m alone, and I’m in my pajamas. And it’s 4am, no one else is up, and it’s really quiet. And I get to just immerse myself in my imagination.” But solitude is a double-edged sword. We talked to Cho along with David Kajganich (“Bones and All”), Lena Dunham (“Catherine Called Birdy”) and Krysty Wilson-Cairns (“The Good Nurse”) for our “Meet the Experts” film writers panel. Watch our group discussion above. Click on each individual name to watch that person’s solo chat.
Cho’s description of late-night writing sessions are “extremely familiar” to Dunham, who also loves “the great incredible highs that come with feeling like you get to enter another world and the feeling of problem solving that feels almost miraculous.

There are plenty of stories of Pixar movies that had, at one time, drastically different vocal performers. William H. Macy was Marlin in “Finding Nemo.” Elizabeth Banks was Joy in “Inside Out.” And the list goes on. What’s rarer is an actor that is cast during the early days of production and make it all the way through. In fact, the only one that comes to mind is Rosalie Chiang, who voiced Mei in the initial phases of “Turning Red” and stuck around until the film was released earlier this year.
Mei is the teenage girl who discovers that she is the victim of an ageless family curse. When she gets upset, she turns into a giant, very fluffy red panda. This of course leads to complications with her friends at school and puts a greater strain on the relationship with her overbearing mother Ming (Sandra Oh). If you...

"Turning Red" is turning heads already for a number of reasons, over and above the metamorphosis of its central character, Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang), into a giant red panda whenever she gets too worked up. It's the next Pixar film, the first one to feature an all-female leadership team, and the third one to bypass theaters altogether and go straight to the Disney+ streaming platform.

Domee Shi won an Oscar for directing the short film "Bao," which was released with Pixar's "Incredibles 2" back in 2018. Fans were taken with her adorable and heartfelt characters, and now Shi is back with her full-length animated Disney/Pixar film "Turning Red," with a script from Shi and Julia Cho. The movie follows 13-year-old Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), who has been very close to her "protective, if not slightly overbearing" mom, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh). Now Mei is a teenager, and she's breaking away and finding herself. One thing she finds out, however,...

In her very first scene, Cho blurs the rigid hierarchy of instructors at universities: The full-timers, with or without tenure, travel on a luxury cruise, while the adjuncts paddle around in canoes below, passing each other in the night. Forget Oscar-tipped films and lush BBC dramatisations – the Lizzie Bennet Diaries is an addictive bi-weekly retelling of Pride and Prejudice for the web generation
Jane Austen has been providing us with Sunday-evening viewing fodder ever since someone had the ratings-winning idea of putting gowns and tight breeches on primetime TV. But as Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy celebrate their 200th anniversary of appearing in print, the best Austen adaptation around at the moment isn't an Oscar-tipped film or a lush BBC dramatisation – it's a series of 10-minute YouTube videos, with accompanying in-character tweets. And it's modern-day. And American.
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries calls itself an "innovative, original episodic video and social media series produced for the web". Actually, it's an addictive bi-weekly retelling of Pride and Prejudice, in which Darcy is a hipster, Lizzie is a beleaguered grad student and her mother is just as desperate to get her married off as in the original.

Let’s face it, University of Southern California (USC) film Cinematic Arts school kids have it pretty well. Just getting in to what is arguably the most competitive graduate film program is a badge of respect in an industry littered with standouts amongst its alumni. George Lucas, Robert Zemeckis, Ron Howard, not to mention The Lxd director Jon M. Chu. Now the famed feeder school for Hollywood the fast track is turning its students on to the digital side with a little help from Subway. It's a first for both school and brand here, the former looking to prepare its latest breed of filmmakers for actually making a career in the emergent medium of web originals and the latter looking to polish its ‘fresh’ image amongst the film crowd. (Something other brands like Stella Artois and Audi have done in spades.) A few months back, Subway approached USC, with some help from La-based Content & Co.
