Who’s ready to bring a scarecrow to life, join a cult, and have Father Winter’s baby? EA’s The Sims is coming to Amazon MGM courtesy of Loki’s helmer Kate Herron. Herron’s effort to bring the quirky and comical world of simulated scandals, shenanigans, and serendipity to life on screens is a curious endeavor, given the random nature of the Sims gameplay and emergent storytelling mechanics. How do you recreate this type of chaos on screens? Inquiring minds and rabid fans want to know!
The Sims is an immensely popular game from Maxis, the company that first let gamers play God with the legendary simulator SimCity. While the brand followed up with other similar-natured games like SimFarm, Sim Hospital, and SimAnt, it was in 2000 that they gave players the chance to live life in The Sims. Herron is directing, co-writing, and executive producing the film with Briony Redman.

Aubrey Plaza doles out wisdom to her younger self in the first trailer for “My Old Ass,” a coming-of-age comedy that premiered to rave reviews at Sundance Film Festival.
The film takes place the summer before 18-year-old Elliot Labrant (Maisy Stella of Lennon & Maisy fame) heads to college in Toronto. In the trailer, Plaza shows up as the middle-aged version of herself while the present-day Elliot is tripping on shrooms in the woods. At first, the younger Elliot doesn’t believe what she’s seeing — and it’s not like they look anything alike.
“You’re me? I don’t have a gap in my teeth,” Stella’s character tells Plaza’s as they sit around a campfire. She’s quick to respond: “Yeah, wear your retainer.”

Aubrey Plaza is turning back the clock on heartbreak in lovable queer dramedy “My Old Ass.”
The coming-of-age feature stars breakout actress Maisy Stella as 18-year-old Elliott, who is spending her final summer on her parents’ cranberry farm before she heads to college in Toronto. After a drug trip gone awry, Elliott is visited by the older version of herself (Plaza), who warns her to not fall in love with a visiting boy (“Wednesday” alum Percy Hynes White) working on her dad’s farm.
Megan Park (“The Fallout”) writes and directs the feature that centers on Elliott’s awakening into adulthood. Margot Robbie produces the indie film, along with Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, and Steven Rales.
Sia collaborator and “Dance Moms” alum Maddie Ziegler and Kerrice Brooks co-star. And yes, this isn’t Plaza’s first time, well, time traveling: the actress previously starred in Colin Trevorrow’s “Safety Not Guaranteed.

Maisy Stella, playing 18-year-old Elliot Labrant, finds her future self at age 39 (played by Aubrey Plaza) in the trailer for Megan Park’s My Old Ass, which dropped on Thursday.
The time-bending coming-of-age tale comes by way of a summer mushroom trip that Elliot goes on with her girlfriends while holidaying in cottage country north of Toronto before heading off to college. While tripping next to a campfire, Elliot meets Plaza’s character seated on the same log, only she’s two decades her senior — and full of warnings about what her younger self should or shouldn’t do.

Avengelyne is an American comic book series that, despite the fact that it never became a mainstream work, became a fantasy cult classic title that many fans remember quite dearly. The series was created by Rob Liefeld and Cathy Christian, and focuses on Avengelyne, an angel who has to fight the forces of evil and is one of the most prominent female comic book heroines outside the mainstream universes. Avengelyne #1, the first issue of the series, appeared in May 1995, and the most recent iteration of the comic book ended in 2012. We have recently reported that a film adaptation of the comic is in the works, and we have now received some interesting new info about the project.
We reported earlier that Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap production company acquired the rights to a cinematic adaptation, with Olivia Wilde eyed to direct. Robbie herself was initially attached simply as a producer, but...

We recently got word that a live-action movie based on Rob Liefeld's fantasy/horror comic series Avengelyne was in development, and we have some exciting updates courtesy of Deadline.
As previously reported, the project will be directed by Olivia Wilde (Don't Worry Darling), with LuckyChap, the company Margot Robbie runs with Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara, and Simon Kinberg, on board to produce. Now, we've learned that Warner Bros is negotiating to close a seven-figure film-rights deal for the movie, and Poor Things scribe Tony McNamara has signed on to pen the script.
The trade also confirmed that Robbie is interested in playing the title role, but it sounds like her decision will be script-dependent.
An earlier version of the movie was in the works back in 2013, with former The Mandalorian actress Gina Carano attached to star.

Warner Bros. in Talks to Land ‘Avengelyne’ With Margot Robbie Eyeing to Star, Tony McNamara to Write
The feature adaptation of “Avengelyne” from Olivia Wilde, Margot Robbie and “X-Men” producer Simon Kinberg is being set up at Warner Bros. The studio is close to finalizing a seven-figure film rights deal.
Robbie is eyeing the role of the titular angel who fights the forces of evil and often finds herself face-to-face with demons and monsters. “Deadpool” co-creator Rob Liefeld first brought the comic book character to life in 1995. “Poor Things” scribe Tony McNamara will pen the screenplay.
“This incredibly humbling journey to bring Avengelyne to life onscreen started through my relationship with super-producer Simon Kinberg who told me he had a perfect fit for the material and asked me to trust him,” Liefeld told Variety in an exclusive statement. “Next thing I’m meeting with Margot Robbie and Olivia Wilde and the connection was electric! Earlier this month, we learned that Margot Robbie and Olivia Wilde are teaming up to bring the comic book character Avengelyne, who was created by Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld, to the big screen. Wilde, who previously directed Booksmart and Don’t Worry Darling, will be directing the film, with Robbie producing through her company LuckyChap – and there’s a chance that she’ll end up playing the title character as well, although her reps were denying that at the time of the earlier report. Now Deadline has broken the news that the Avengelyne project has landed at Warner Bros., with the studio negotiating to close a seven figure film rights deal. It makes sense that WB wanted it, since they just had a $1.4 billion success with Robbie and LuckyChap’s Barbie.

Avengelyne may be flying to Warner Bros., with the studio in early talks to acquire the comic book package that hit earlier this month.
Don’t Worry Darling filmmaker Olivia Wilde is attached to direct the feature, with Barbie team Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara of LuckyChap producing. The banner has a first-look deal with Warners, which made the studio the first stop for the package, which has added screenwriter Tony McNamara to the mix. Longtime X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is also producing.
Avengelyne launched in 1995 and centered on a fallen angel cast to Earth. The hero is entrusted to find and protect The One, a person who is the key to protecting humanity from demons and other monsters. Liefeld co-created the character with Cathy Christian and Tony Lobito. Liefeld, meanwhile, has Deadpool & Wolverine due out in July from Marvel Studios.

Sundance Film Festival is heading to London again this summer and the programme is full of cinematic goodies. More below.
The days are getting lighter, the sun is shining ever so slightly more now and we’ve packed away our thickest wool jumpers, although we still need some thick socks. That must mean one thing and one thing only.
Sundance Film Festival: London is almost upon us.
Some might say summer is coming too, but we’re mostly excited for Sundance London, which has just revealed their full programme for this year’s festival. The festival brings a fine selection of films which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, in Park City, Utah. The crème de la crème, so to speak.
The festival will open on 6 June with a screening of Kneecap, Rich Peppiatt’s Irish-language film and draw to a close on 9 June with Sean Wang...

The long-in-gestation Monopoly movie rolls a double six, as Margot Robbie and her production company join the project.
I was writing news over at another website when Hollywood powerful people first started talking about bringing the board game Monopoly to the big screen. Ridley Scott, if memory serves, was circling the project at one point, but back then, it all came to nothing.
Then the Barbie movie happened. Taking the Mattel dolls as its source, the film was a gigantic success which had Hollywood scrambling around toy shop aisles for more inspiration.
That’s when Monopoly was re-discovered. Lionsgate picked up the project when it acquired Entertainment One at the end of last year from Hasbro. It’s extended the rights since too, and now it’s gone to Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap for a bit of help.

Lionsgate and Hasbro announced today that they have signed a deal with LuckyChap, the award-winning production company headed by Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara, to produce Monopoly, a motion picture in development based on the legendary classic board game. Hasbro Entertainment will also produce.
Lionsgate extended its development rights to the beloved, multi-generational board game with its purchase of eOne, which was completed in December 2023.
Monopoly is the world’s most popular board game, with 99% global awareness. It is available in more than 100 countries and has sold nearly half a billion copies since 1935.
LuckyChap most recently produced Barbie, the Oscar-winning hit that has taken in over $1.4 billion worldwide at the global box office, as well as Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn and the upcoming release My Old Ass, a hit at Sundance starring Aubrey Plaza and Maisy Stella.
Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said, “I could...

Barbie producer LuckyChap is rolling the dice once more with a classic game adaption. The banner run by Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara has joined Hasbro Entertainment and Lionsgate’s Monopoly movie as producers.
Lionsgate announced the news at CinemaCon on Wednesday.
Hollywood has tried to crack a Monopoly adaptation for more than a decade, with Kevin Hart and filmmaker Tim Story among those who have come and gone. Lionsgate extended its rights to Monopoly when it completed its purchase of Hasbro’s film and TV arm eOne in December.
Monopoly dates back to 1935, and challenges players to acquire properties and build houses and hotels, all while avoiding bankruptcy and the dreaded “go directly to jail” card. Nearly 1 billion copies have been sold.
Lionsgate film boss Adam Fogelson said in a statement that LuckyChap “are exceptional producers who choose their projects with great thought and care, and join...

You might not know it because it is not a mainstream comic book title, but Avengelyne is undoubtedly a fantasy cult classic that many fans will remember dearly. Created by Rob Liefeld and Cathy Christian, Avengelyne is an angel who has to fight the forces of evil and is one of the most prominent female comic book heroines outside the mainstream universes. Avengelyne #1 appeared in May 1995, and the most recent iteration of the comic book ended in 2012. Now, in April 2024, there are reports that an Avengelyne movie is in the works with some major names attached.
Avengelyne is a very special character with a very interesting story. Author Rob Liefeld once described her like this: “Avengelyne resonated so powerfully with the audience because her story of redemption is one that is so relatable. A fallen angel, sentenced to redeem herself by serving humanity, Earth is a foreign environment to her,...

Margot Robbie’s production company looks set to take on a film based on Avengelyne, a comic book character created by Deadpool’s Rob Liefeld.
If reports are accurate, Booksmart director Olivia Wilde is set to make Avengelyne, a take on the comic book character created by the mind behind Deadpool, Rob Liefeld. It’s the second project Wilde has lined up at Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap Entertainment.
According to Deadline, 'Avengelyne is an angel who fights the forces of evil and often finds herself face-to-face with demons and monsters. She was the most feared warrior in Heaven’s Warhost, having single-handedly broken into Pandemonium, the outer fortress of Hell, to confront the Devil himself. She is a fallen angel, banished from Heaven by God after being tricked into questioning his love for humans. Avengelyne was stripped of all her angelic abilities, other than her great strength and her blood,...

Olivia Wilde’s comic book action film Avengelyne is picking up the sword with Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap production company along for the ride. Based on the signature comic book creation by Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld, rumor has it Margot Robbie could play the lead, but her reps are denying her involvement with that part of the project. LuckyChap includes Robbie, Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, and Simon Kinberg. LuckyChap produced Barbie, the billion-dollar barn-burner based on Mattel’s iconic blonde bombshell. With influence like that, it’s difficult not to imagine Avengelyne being a big to-do.
After directing 2019’s Booksmart and the controversial Don’t Worry Darling, Olivia Wilde is one of Hollywood’s most in-demand filmmakers. Exclusive: In what shapes up with the potential to be a big one, The Dish hears there is film rights auction in the works for Avengelyne — an angel who fights the forces of evil — with Olivia Wilde directing, based on the signature comic book creation by Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld. Aboard to produce is LuckyChap, the shingle Margot Robbie runs with Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara, and Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon through their Genre banner.
I’ve heard the plan was for this to be developed for Robbie to star, but her camp is denying that part of it. A big A-list writer is circling to adapt.
The principals behind this are not commenting, but expect this one to hit the street within the next two weeks. LuckyChap is coming off Barbie, last year’s top-grossing film with eight Oscar nominations. Wilde last directed Don’t Worry Darling and before that Booksmart.

Could Margot Robbie be bringing the same kind of meta introspection and examination to The Sims in the way she did with Barbie? That is a possibility of what’s to come as her production company, LuckyChap, has taken on the life simulation game for an upcoming feature film. The Sims is an immensely popular game from Maxis, the company that first let gamers play God with the legendary simulator SimCity. While the brand followed up with other similar-natured games like SimFarm, Sim Hospital and SimAnt, it was in 2000 that they gave players the chance to live life in The Sims.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kate Herron, who is known for her work on the first season of the successful Marvel Studios series on Disney+, Loki, is set to take the helm on the feature. Herron is also attached to co-write the film with Briony Redman. Robbie’s LuckyChap also includes Tom Ackerly,...

The long-running and hugely popular life simulator video game series The Sims is getting the movie treatment and there’s some exciting talent behind the project.
The Sims is set to be adapted into a movie, exploring the lives of its simulated suburban occupants in feature-length, cinematic glory.
Just in case you’ve never come across the popular series of video games published by Electronic Arts, The Sims series of games fall into the life simulator genre, allowing you to create and then oversee the lives of countless suburban residents. If you’ve ever fancied playing God, The Sims essentially allows you to do that, giving you the freedom to be a benevolent overlord (build your sims a new house) or a vengeful deity (burn down your sims’ new house).

Bye, Barbie.
Warner Bros. released Greta Gerwig’s Barbie last summer, on July 21, 2023, and it became an instant pop culture phenomenon before going on to end the year as the No. 1 movie of the year thanks to a $1.445 billion dollar finish. But now that the Oscars are just hours away, the A-lister revealed what her plans are come next week during a brief interview with The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday night before heading into Chanel and Charles Finch’s 15th annual pre-Oscars dinner at Polo Lounge in Beverly Hills. But first, Robbie was keen to name two of her favorite Chanel looks she’s worn recently.

The new series is the first under Metzler’s multi-year overall deal with Netflix, announced in February 2022 following the massive success of “Maid.” The series — starring Margaret Qualley and produced by LuckyChap, as well as John Wells Productions — debuted on the streamer in October 2021, where it spent 14 weeks on the streamer’s global Top 10 TV list and reached the Top 10 in 93 countries. “Maid” was also a critical hit, as Metzler — an award-winning writer and playwright whose credits also include “Shameless” and “Orange Is the New Black” — won a WGA award and the show earned multiple Emmy, Golden Globe and Critics Choice award nominations.

The stars and artists behind the biggest films of 2023 descended on London this weekend for the BAFTA Film Awards. British film’s biggest night is often seen as the best predictor of Oscar momentum before the Academy Awards and the results often mirror each other.
If that’s the case this year, it will be all “Oppenheimer” all the time. Universal’s Christopher Nolan epic took home many of the night’s biggest categories, winning the top prize of Best Film along with Best Director for Nolan, Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. The film also picked up major craft wins for Cinematography, Editing, and Original Score.

How does one repay a team of producers for launching its highest grossing film of all time? Give them the key to the studio — literally.
On Monday, “Barbie” producers, LuckyChap’s Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara inked a first-look deal at Warner Bros., which distributed the $1.4 billion-grossing movie. So, to celebrate, Warner Bros. Pictures Group Co-Chairs and CEO Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca decided to resurrect an old tradition, started by WB co-founder Jack Warner.
“Every once in a while, when a significant piece of talent signed a deal with the studio, he presented that company, that talent, with a key to the studio,” De Luca said as he and Abdy raised a toast to the trio. “We are so delighted to have our first key to our studio be given to LuckyChap.”
This historical artifact, De Luca noted, was particularly special, as the LuckyChap team received...

Warner Bros. really likes being in the Margot Robbie business. Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group has signed a multi-year first look feature film deal with Robbie’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment. It will make WB the first stop for any film projects Robbie wishes to produce through her production arm, which she runs alongside Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara.
It’s no big question as to why. Robbie and Ackerley together produced WB and Mattel’s “Barbie,” which grossed $1.45 billion as the highest-grossing film of 2023, and went on to earn eight Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture.
But, not so fast, “Barbie” fans. That doesn’t a sequel is incoming. The announcement made on February 12 by WB film chief heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy doesn’t mention any specific projects just yet, nor does it stipulate whether Robbie would star in the films.

Warner Bros. is staying in business with Margot Robbie, the star and producer of 2023 box office champion Barbie. The studio has set a first look film deal with LuckyChap, the banner Robbie runs with Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara.
Barbie stands as Warners’ highest grossing film of all time with $1.45 billion. It became a cultural phenomenon and landed eight Oscar nominations, including for best picture.
The deal is another feather in the cap for Warner Bros. film bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, who have focused on courting top talent, signing Tom Cruise to a much ballyhooed (but non-exclusive) deal, and bringing Ryan Coogler’s next movie to the studio (wooing him with a deal in which the rights revert to him after a period of time).
These public facing moves have helped counter negative sentiment parent company Warner Bros. Discovery and CEO David Zaslav have earned in creative...
