“America’s Got Talent” is TV’s only competition show that embraces all forms of variety acts, whether you’re a singer, a comedian, a magician, an aerialist, or anything in between. Throughout its nearly two decades on NBC, seven solo singers have claimed victory, with the most recent one being Season 14’s Kodi Lee. (See the “AGT” winners list.) However, there are four specific categories that have yet to win the top prize of $1 million and a headline show in Las Vegas. Can any of these types of acts make “AGT” history during the Season 19 finale on Tuesday, September 24?
First up, here’s a refresher on this year’s Top 10 finalists: singer Richard Goodall, quick-change artist Solange Kardinaly, air-dance group Airfootworks, dance crew Brent Street, singer Dee Dee Simon, acrobatic group Hakuna Matata Acrobats, comedian Learnmore Jonasi, dog act Roni Sagi & Rhythm, aerial duo Sebastián & Sonia, and drone group Sky Elements.

Even though singing janitor Richard Goodall is the odds-on favorite to win Season 19 of “America’s Got Talent,” this competition is far from over. In fact, there is enormous online fan support for quick-change artist Solange Kardinaly, who blows the audience away each week with her eye-popping illusion act. According to Gold Derby’s winner predictions, Richard has leading 5/6 odds to prevail, while Solange is nipping at his heels in second place with 5/1 odds.
This week during the September 17 episode of “AGT,” Solange delivered arguably her best routine to date when she quick-changed her clothes multiple times all while performing various magic tricks. It all led to the moment where she flew up into the air and became engulfed in white confetti. Watch the “AGT” video above.

Singing janitor Richard Goodall is officially Howie Mandel‘s pick to win “America’s Got Talent.”
The Canadian judge made that prediction following Richard’s performance in the September 17 episode of “AGT.” The middle school custodian belted out “Faithfully” on the big stage at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and earned a wild standing ovation from the judges and the live studio audience. “I think you just sang yourself one million dollars,” Howie declared as Richard broke down in tears. Watch the video above.
As for the other judges, Heidi Klum told Richard, “I have been faithfully your biggest fan since the very, very first day we met, all the way through this competition … I hope that everyone is gonna vote for you. I want you to win this so bad!” And Simon Cowell noted, “From the minute you came on this show, you’ve never crumbled. You’ve risen. We all need a hero right now,...

Back in early 2023, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan told Collider, “I have three movie ideas. I even have the structure of all three to some extent. And so it’s a very weird and interesting situation I’m feeling. I wish I could tell them faster. I wish I could get there faster, but there is no shortcut. I have to spend the six to nine months to write it. I have to storyboard for three months, and then we have pre-production, and then shooting it, and edit for as long as I can get every single second.“ Soon after, it was announced that he had secured a multi-year deal with Warner Bros. – and he immediately went to work on his recent thriller Trap. Now that Trap has made its way out into the world, it’s time for Shyamalan to start putting the second of those three movie ideas he said he had,...

The action movie “Rebel Ridge” topped the film charts for two consecutive weeks. It attracted 68 million hours of streaming in its first week and 31.2 million in its second. Critics praised Aaron Pierre’s performance in the “thriller that has maintained its top position.” In television, “The Perfect Couple” miniseries accrued 103 million viewing hours after its debut. Starring Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber and Dakota Fanning, the show based on Elin Hilderbrand’s novel continued drawing 20.3 million over its opening weekend from September 5 to 8.

After portraying a negligent, demon-possessed mom in The Deliverance, Andra Day will be back onscreen in a more protective motherly role in Exhibiting Forgiveness, the directorial debut from artist Titus Kaphar, set for theatrical release Oct. 18.
In the film, which draws from Kaphar’s lived experience, Day plays Aisha, a singer-songwriter and the wife of André Holland’s Tarrell Rodin, a revered painter and father who’s forced to face unhealed wounds. Then his estranged father, La’Ron (John Earl Jelks), a recovering addict, unexpectedly reappears and attempts to repair their relationship at the urging of Rodin’s mother Joyce (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor).
At Thursday’s L.A. premiere for the film, which debuted at Sundance earlier this year, Day talked to The Hollywood Reporter about her “bucket list” experience working with Holland.

A24, the company behind films like Room, Moonlight, Lady Bird, Everything Everywhere All at Once and Past Lives, is as bold and daring a distributor as any in the movie business today. Rarely has that been more evident than it is in a pair of films that they brought to the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (to say nothing of the film that they acquired during the fest, a nearly four-hour VistaVision epic intended for projection in 70mm).
Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino’s Queer and Dutch filmmaker Halina Reijn’s Babygirl both came to Toronto after having their world premieres at the Venice Film Festival. Both films star bona fide Hollywood A-listers — Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman, respectively — in highly risqué roles that explore sexual inhibitions, or lack thereof, and power dynamics. Halle Berry is one of the biggest movie stars of all time. That is a fact. Sure, she’s played Catwoman in that abomination of a movie, but her career includes major credits such as Monster’s Ball (2001), the role of Storm in four installments of the X-Men film series (2000–2014), the henchwoman of a robber in the thriller Swordfish (2001), and Bond girl Jinx in Die Another Day (2002). She also has significant roles in Perfect Stranger (2007), Cloud Atlas (2012), and The Call (2013), as well as Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017) and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019).
Her role in Monster’s Ball earned her an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role, which is when she became the (so far) only African-American woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, and the first woman of color.
In a recent big interview for Marie Claire, the actress, among other things, discussed her career in...

To say that the Academy has historically been biased against people of color would be a major understatement. Since the Oscars were founded in 1929, only 23 Black people have won across all four acting categories, and the numbers really aren't better in the other categories either. While this is obviously an egregious statistic,...

Actress Halle Berry remains disappointed by the lack of progress in recognizing Black female performers with Academy Awards. In a recent interview, Berry expressed ongoing frustration that no other Black woman has received the Oscar for Best Actress since she made history with the honor in 2002.
The Oscar-winning star said she feels “eternally miffed” and “continually saddened” that her win for “Monster’s Ball” stands alone as the only time a Black woman earned the award in the category’s nearly 100-year history. Berry said there have been many deserving Black actresses in the past two decades who were passed over by the Academy, including Andra Day and Viola Davis.
Berry was reflecting on diversity challenges in Hollywood brought to light by the #OscarsSoWhite movement of 2016. The 58-year-old recalled that when she received her historic Oscar, “I really thought it meant something, but I think it meant nothing.” Berry said feeling...

The Boy and the Heron (Hayao Miyazaki)
Cinema at its most boundlessly imaginative, The Boy and the Heron is a journey of thrilling, pure dream logic chock full of images that feel conjured from the deepest corners of Miyazaki’s mind. Considering the painstaking, hand-drawn labor it takes to pull off an animation this encumbered by standard narrative conventions, the feat of Miyazaki being able to corral such a vision feels miraculous. For the sake of the medium, here’s hoping the 82-year-old legend has one more in him.

Lee Daniels’ background in independent film – Monster’s Ball, Precious – once had him wondering what it would be like to work for a studio, a curiosity that was finally satisfied when he made Empire for Fox.

Lee Daniels’ TV series Empire ran for six seasons on Fox, but the director has confirmed that the behind-the-scenes process wasn’t his favorite. In a new interview with The Film Stage, Daniels confirmed he “only did Empire just so I could see what that experience was like.”
As it turned out, it wasn’t great, with Daniels describing the making of Empire as “horrible.” He added, “Absolutely the worst experience. Horrible! But guess what? Fucking that money, money, money! I was able to put my kids through college and shit.

Lee Daniels wants to do it all. The filmmaker behind Monster’s Ball, Precious, and The Butler has made an endlessly compelling horror movie, The Deliverance, for Netflix, starring Andra Day, Glenn Close, Mo’Nique, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. The Film Stage chatted with Daniels about his new film, never wanting to do the same thing twice, loving filming in Pittsburgh, selling out a bit, being convinced white people will not get the Glenn Close performance, and changing the media landscape with Empire.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
The Film Stage: So I have to tell you: I live in Pittsburgh.
Lee Daniels: Currently live in Pittsburgh?
Yeah.
Were you there when we were shooting?
I’ve been here since 2018, so I was definitely here when you were.
Where in Pittsburgh?

The Deliverance is one of the most anticipated horror films of 2024. Directed by Lee Daniels from a screenplay co-written by David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum, the Netflix mystery horror film is inspired by a true story known as the Ammons haunting case. The real story on which the film is based took place in Gary, Indiana in 2011 and it revolved around Latoya Ammons, her mother, Rosa Campbell, and her three children.
The real has been changed to make the film good and not boring but there are many scenes in the film that are based on Ammons’ claims, one of which is the one where a child crawls backward up a hospital wall.

When Andra Day was considering the lead role of Ebony in Lee Daniels’ latest film The Deliverance, she consulted two entities: God and her mom.
“At first, [her mother] kind of had pause,” Day tells The Hollywood Reporter, admitting she was equally hesitant about dabbling in the satanic realm for the Netflix feature. “She was praying with me about it and through the process. And she has been very clear with me, she said, ‘I’m not going to watch the movie,’ not because she doesn’t think that the message is great. My mother’s just like, ‘Listen, if it ain’t Disney+, I’m out. I see her keeping me awake at night.'” (Laughs.)
The Deliverance, which is now streaming on Netflix after a limited theatrical run, draws from the true story of Latoya Ammons, an Indiana woman who, in 2011, claimed she and her children had been possessed by demons.

Glenn Close collaborated with Lee Daniels for the first time on their new horror film “The Deliverance,” and in an interview with Radio Andy, she said colleagues warned her about the director that “he’s crazy.” That only pushed Close to work with him more.
“For me, that’s a compliment,” the Academy Award nominee said. “A lot of times when people in this business say someone’s crazy it means they don’t suffer fools, and it means they have a vision and it doesn’t always go along with the crowd.”
Close complimented the director for creating an inclusive environment on set. The “Fatal Attraction” star said Daniels would encourage the cast to gather around the monitor after a difficult take. She said most directors would not open themselves up to criticism in the way Daniels did.

The Deliverance on Netflix is based on a true story, but as with any adaptation, there are plenty of similarities and differences from the source material.
The supernatural streaming horror hit is based on the real-life possession case of Latoya Ammons, an Indiana woman who claims the devil possessed her children.
The film, directed by Empire's Lee Daniels, stars Andra Day and Glenn Close, among other A-list talent.

“Twisters” (Universal) wasn’t the biggest film of the summer. But it is becoming the comeback kid among the group, both theatrically and at home.
The tornado-focused special effects disaster film just had a very rare weekend in theaters. In its seventh weekend, losing 200 screens, its gross increased 17 percent. That comes in its third week at home on PVOD. And right at the same time, “Twisters” returned to #1 at iTunes, edging out the second weekend of “Inside Out 2” (Disney), 2024’s biggest hit.
The Pixar film retains its top spot at Fandango, with the advantage that its $24.99 rental cost gives it with that site listing by revenue earned, not transactions like iTunes does. In any event, the split decision this week continues a now multi-month trend of no film placing #1 at both for two consecutive weeks.

‘The Deliverance’: How Netflix Viewers Responded To Glenn Close’s Portrayal Of A Bimbo Named Alberta
Lee Daniels tried to warn everybody before The Deliverance dropped on Netflix: “Y’all are not ready for Glenn in this.”
The director is talking about Glenn Close, who plays the chain-smoking, cancer-riddled mother of Andra Day in the film that’s inspired by real events. Daniels’ first foray into the horror genre shot to No. 1 on Netflix after dropping Aug. 30, which may have a little bit — or a whole lot — to do with Close, who clearly had the time of her life playing a tramp named Alberta.
In The Deliverance, Alberta is the mom of Ebony (Day), an alcoholic single mom whose hands are full with three kids, no money and a haunted home that’s fooling a social worker (Mo’Nique) into thinking that she’s beating her kids. The story is inspired by the 2011 case of Latoya Ammons, who moved with her family into a scary Indiana rental...

Aside from IP with mass appeal and superhero stuff, horror is about the only thing that seems to make any money at the box office these days. That's mostly due to the fact horror movies typically don't cost a whole lot to make, leaving more profit on the table at the end of their theatrical runs. But horror isn't just a reliably popular genre at the box office. It also does well on streaming, where we've actually had some pretty decent offerings in recent years.
By far the best example is "His House," which hit Netflix back in 2020 and was even better than your favorite horror movie. Indeed, the film earned a rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and proved that Netflix could be much more than a delivery method for middling Kevin Hart projects and instantly forgettable streaming films. Unfortunately, not all the horror that emerges on Netflix is of quite the same standard.

There’s a line from Glenn Close in the third act of Lee Daniels’ possession horror The Deliverance that is undeniably gasp-worthy — a gratuitous piece of unholy dialogue that would be eyebrow-raising anyway, let alone when delivered by an Egot nominee sporting pointy teeth and demon claws. Whether that line falls on the side of so-wild-it’s-kind-of-great, or just-plain-cringe, it is at least attention-grabbing — which sadly can’t be said for the rest of The Deliverance’s denouement.
The intention is interesting. Daniels — previously behind Precious, The Butler, and most recently The United States Vs. Billie Holiday — places a rare Black lens on the possession-horror subgenre, exploring the trials of single mother Ebony. Her predicament is already precarious: she’s previously spent time in prison; she has issues with alcohol; she’s raising three kids while funding her mother’s (Glenn Close) cancer treatment; social services are constantly circling. The Lee Daniels-directed, Glenn Close and Andra Day-starring Netflix movie “The Deliverance” is getting a lot of attention for that scene (more on this later), but there’s also something else to take note of about the film: much like many a demonic possession movie that’s come before it, this one is “inspired by true events.” But what are those true events? And how much is “The Deliverance” a true story?
The movie is an imagining of what Latoya Ammons, her three kids, and her mother Rosa Campbell said they experienced at their home in Indiana in 2011, as detailed in a 2014 piece published by the Indianapolis Star.
Ammons and her children all claimed they were possessed by demons, and were so convincing that the late Gary police Capt. Charles Austin eventually conceded that after many home visits and interviews, “I am a believer.”

Netflix’s latest horror drama flick, The Deliverance, directed by Lee Daniels, leaves a fairly bad aftertaste as far as conventional haunting movies are considered—by trying to ape every irritable genre trope viewers can think of. But the singular aspect that makes the movie worth a watch is the ensemble of prolific female actors and the characterization at work, which elevates an otherwise mediocre, forgettable movie to somewhat tolerable drama. Family turmoil, parental anxiety, generational trauma, racial and social stigmas, addiction—there are a number of issues The Deliverance tries to address, and as a result, there is a lot that the actors can chew on. However, the nonsensical third act reflects the utter weakness of the script, which ultimately derails the movie, which otherwise had a great potential of turning out to be a character-driven drama, keeping the horror part excluded, that is.

Lee Daniels’ new horror film, The Deliverance, has received mixed reviews, but Glenn Close’s performance has been widely praised by fans. Daniels’ film is a supernatural thriller based on the real-life Ammons haunting case. In the film, Andra Day plays Ebony Jackson, a character inspired by Latoya Ammons, while Close plays her religious White mother.

However, in one unexpectedly light moment, Close delivers a line that almost choked up fans with laughter. The line felt majorly out of place in an otherwise spine-chilling film. While some fans found the moment amusing, others were disappointed that Daniels had an eight-time Oscar nominee deliver such a line.

"The Exorcist," "Poltergeist," and... "The Deliverance"? With its wild writing choices, a wig-wearing Glenn Close, and a mounting pile of mostly negative reviews, the new Netflix horror film from Lee Daniels doesn't exactly seem like it's ready to stand among the genre greats. Yet according to Daniels himself, the three movies have something in common: their sets were all supposedly cursed.
"Listen, I read those books about the making of 'Poltergeist' and the making of 'The Exorcist,'" Daniels told Variety in a new interview. "And I'm like, 'Nope, not today, Satan. Ain't happening today up in this motherf***er.'"
The filmmaker behind "The Butler" and "The Paperboy" may have had some reason to be concerned. Although both of the other movie "curses" mentioned above were likely a combination of coincidence and unsafe working conditions (more on that later), the allegedly true story "The Deliverance" is based on is pretty spooky.

Our top pick this week is five-time Academy Award nominee Yorgos Lanthimos’ black comedy “Kinds of Kindness,” which is now streaming on Hulu. It’s Lanthimos’ third collaboration with Emma Stone, after “The Favourite” and “Poor Things.” It’s unlikely to make as strong a showing at the Academy Awards as those two, but that’s pretty much by design, as the film’s anthology structure and darkly absurdist tone make it not the kind of thing that wins Oscars. Jesse Plemons did win Best Actor at Cannes, though, so he could be a longshot contender in that category, especially at the Golden Globes.
The film consists of three loosely connected stories about people experiencing various forms of severe distress. In addition to Stone and Plemons, the cast includes Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, and Mamadou Athie.

Lee Daniels‘ first foray into horror filmmaking, “The Deliverance,” just dropped on Netflix, but it’s a subject — and a genre — that has been on the director’s mind since he made “Precious” 15 years ago. That’s when he first heard the true account of a family besieged by evil spirits on which “The Deliverance” is based. “I was very intrigued by this story,” Daniels told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, “and I was intrigued by the idea of doing horror because I’m obsessed with ‘The Exorcist.’ I’m obsessed with ‘Rosemary’s Baby.’ I’m obsessed with ‘The Omen.'”
That obsession has yielded one of Daniels’ most audacious films yet, which is saying something when you’re talking about the filmmaker behind such singular works as “The Paperboy,” “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” and the television series “Empire.” What makes “The Deliverance” great is the way that...

“The Deliverance” is a horror movie starring Andra Day. With Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and Mo’Nique. It is directed by Lee Daniels.
“The Deliverance” aligns itself with the genre pioneered by filmmakers such as Jordan Peele: horror films that simultaneously carry powerful themes of racially charged social vindications. In this cinematic endeavor, Lee Daniels directs a compelling horror film featuring Glenn Close in a significant role. The movie ultimately morphs into a haunted house narrative, blending elements of horror and the supernatural. Although it doesn’t break new ground in the genre, “The Deliverance” crafts a classic horror tale revolving around familiar themes, resulting in a well-executed genre film… with the undeniable talent of Glenn Close.
Andra Day delivers an outstanding performance as a mother grappling with alcohol dependency, custody battles, and a myriad of other personal issues.
Plot Summary
Ebony is a woman facing a multitude of challenges with her three children.

Apparently, I’ve been a fan of the horror genre since before I could talk, which means I have nearly 3 decades of horror watching under my belt. So, whatever I say has at least some sort of credibility to it, you know? But disclaimer aside, if you couldn’t tell already by the title of this review, The Deliverance doesn’t deliver the perfect Black haunted house horror that we were all hoping it would. In fact, it flourishes as a family drama that waits way too long for the horror elements, which end up looking like an abrupt afterthought. Established director Lee Daniels has many masterpieces under his belt, and this is certainly something different from what he’s done before. The Deliverance tells the story of single mother Ebony, who moves her three kids and her mom into a new house in the hope of a fresh start.

Day plays a single mom named Ebony, while Glenn Close co-stars as her mom and Mo’Nique plays a social worker. The cast also includes Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor,...

Something wicked is lurking in Ebony Jackson’s new home. It’s in the walls, in the air — and now it’s possessing her children. The Deliverancehas a familiar setup: family moves into new home; home is possessed by supernatural force of unspeakable malevolence; family is tormented by said evil spirit. But Ebony (played by Oscar nominee Andra Day) will need more than just an exorcist to save her family. “I didn’t see it as a horror film, at least not in the way people have come to expect,” director Lee Daniels (Precious) told Netflix.
For the cast and crew, The Deliverance was more than a fright fest; it was a story about a broken family that happened to also include a demonic entity. “This is a story with a social justice message that deals with family trauma, Ptsd, and cyclical brokenness,” Day told Netflix. “It’s a story about family,...
