Young Roberts sings for Nick in 'Unfabulous'
Emma Roberts has been cast in the lead of a new comedy pilot under consideration at Nickelodeon. The 12-year-old niece of Julia Roberts and daughter of Eric Roberts will play the preteen protagonist of Unfabulous, which chronicles the life of a musically inclined junior high school student. Created by Sue Rose (Pepper Ann), Unfabulous began production last week in Los Angeles. Unfabulous is Emma Roberts' first TV role; she has appeared in films including Blow and Spymate and is attached to star in the upcoming film Daisy Winters. After a meeting with Emma Roberts this year, Nickelodeon was determined to work with her. "We had a great meeting and came away very impressed by her," Nickelodeon senior vp talent Paula Kaplan said. "When 'Unfabulous' came along, we knew we had found just the right project for her." Unfabulous chronicles the life and times of 12-year-old Ally, who periodically breaks into song to describe her feelings. Roberts will do her own singing for the part. Each episode opens with an embarrassing incident that happens to Ally. The story line then retreats backward in time to explain how she came to find herself in the opening mishap. The comical songs will be composed by Jill Sobule, a singer-songwriter whose credits include the hit "I Kissed a Girl." Emma Roberts is repped by manager David Sweeney at Sweeney Management. Her deal was brokered by Neil Meyer of Stone, Meyer & Genow.
