It’s actually funny watching everyone trip all over themselves in their attempts to deter Dwight Manfredi on Tulsa King Season 1 Episode 2.
Dwight, the mobster with a heart of gold, goes about his business, being kind and friendly even when stabbing so-called friends in the back, and it seems to scare the bejesus out of the competition.
Whether Cal Thresher enlists a US Attorney to handle Dwight’s court case personally or Chickie joins forces with Bill Bevilaqua, people are moving mountains to stop Dwight’s success.
(Brian Douglas/Paramount+)
And make no bones about it. Dwight Manfredi is a success.
Maybe the way Dwight presents himself to the world gets so many others in a snit.
He is a nice guy. He’s made terrible decisions and continues on the wrong path, but he’s not a jerk. So many successful people are jerks that it stands out.
His demeanor catches people off guard.

Three Women premieres September 13 on Starz.
The series highlights some taboo and controversial issues that three distinct women experienced, and it will resonate with audiences.
The issues these three women experienced could have happened to any of us. Their stories needed to be told and heard.
Author and executive producer Lisa Taddeo began this journey by traveling the country for eight years, researching these three women’s stories.
Together, she and the showrunner and executive producer Laura Eason have crafted an in-depth look at female desire through Lina, Maggie, and Sloane’s voices. (Courtesy of Starz)
We talked with them and several of the cast to understand this dramatic series, which we’ve seen almost entirely and can’t say enough fantastic things about.
These women shared some enticing information about the series and what to expect from their characters’ journeys.

Lisa Kudrow plays the jolly leader of a merry band of thieves in the official trailer for Time Bandits, the Apple TV+ fantasy comedy that co-creator Taika Waititi adapted from the 1981 Terry Gilliam film of the same name.
“Nothing is too big for us to steal,” Kudrow’s character, Penelope, explains to the series’ hero, Kevin, an 11-year-old history buff and the central child star played by Brit actor Kal-El Tuck. “Ok, now that we’re close, maybe it is too big to steal,” a deadpan Kudrow says in an otherwise absurdly comedic scene in the trailer as Penelope, Kevin and her crack team of robbers come upon a giant Trojan horse about to enter medieval city gates.
Time Bandits has its characters traveling through time and space to meet adventure at every turn as they look to plunder treasure, whether when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, as Stonehenge was created or during the Harlem Renaissance.

Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan’s 1990s all-female music festival Lilith Fair is the subject of a feature documentary from the CBC and director Ally Pankiw.
The first Lilith Fair, which McLachlan spearheaded to defy a male-dominated music industry that couldn’t envision more than one woman performing on a concert stage or on a radio playlist, kicked off on July 5, 1997.
Over a quarter-century later, Dan Levy’s Not a Real Production Company and Elevation Pictures are co-producing Lilith Fair, with interviews by McLachlan, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Erykah Badu, Natalie Merchant, Mýa, Jewel, Indigo Girls, Emmylou Harris, Brandi Carlile and Olivia Rodrigo.
The original ladies-first Lilith Fair tour from 1997 to 1999 attracted artists like Crow, Tracy Chapman, Fiona Apple and Liz Phair from across the music world, and went on to help launch the careers of performers like Missy Elliott, The Chicks, Nelly Furtado and Christina Aguilera.

During her time in journalism school, writer-director Ally Pankiw discovered documentary studies and broadcast news, and immediately fell in love with video editing and production.
Although she didn’t attend traditional film school, she taught herself the basics of Final Draft after graduating and started writing. After directing Season 1 of Netflix’s “Feel Good,” the “Joan Is Awful” episode of “Black Mirror” and more, Pankiw finally got funding for her first feature film: “I Used to Be Funny,” starring “Shiva Baby” breakout Rachel Sennott.
The film is in select theaters via Utopia and was released digitally on June 18. Sennott stars as Sam, a stand-up comedian struggling with Ptsd after being sexually assaulted. She tries to decide whether or not to look for Brooke (Olga Petsa), a missing teenage girl she used to nanny. The story swaps between past and present, where Sam navigates her trauma.

“Truth Serum,” a short film starring “Baby Reindeer” creator Richard Gadd, has been snapped up by Omeleto.
Directed by Vika Evdokimenko, “Truth Serum” is a comedy that follows a group of guests at a housewarming party who are slipped a mysterious drug. “When ugly truths start to emerge, chaos reigns and threatens the relationships of old friends,” reads the logline.
“Baby Reindeer” fans will no doubt enjoy seeing Gadd playing a character that is not dissimilar to the Netflix series’ Donny Dunn. Gadd’s character of Jimi is friends with the host couple; he is described as a “liability” whose “self-destructive behavior masks deep self-loathing and a secret that’s not ready to come out.”
Gadd stars alongside Olivia Vinall (“Road Kill”) as a party hostess at the end of her tether and Sophie Kennedy Clark (“The Danish Girl”) as an unreformed party girl who’s dragged her underage daughter along for the ride.

Comedian and actor Nick Offerman kicked off his Thursday night show at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre with a cheeky song about he was going to “keep it PG-13” for the night. While the sentiment didn’t last too long, the songs sure did.
The show, titled Nick Offerman and Friends vs Climate Crisis, was part of the Netflix is a Joke Fest that has taken over Los Angeles for the last week, and was put on in support of environmental non-profit Natural Resources Defense Council (Nrdc).
A known outdoorsman, Offerman told the crowd he was a “huge fan” of the organization before jumping into his opening song, but not before offering the non-profit a quick suggestion for what the night’s funds should be used towards. “I want to hope they’ll use some of the proceeds from tonight to think tank a flashier name,” Offerman joked with audience.

In the canon of unexpected streaming successes, Netflix‘s Baby Reindeer looms large as a particularly unlikely hit.
The seven-episode British series, created by and starring comedian Richard Gadd has taken the media world by storm. Per Netflix’s metrics, Baby Reindeer is on its way to becoming one of the most-watched shows in the streamer’s history. Audiences remain captivated by Gadd’s depiction of real life events – perhaps too captivated, as the internet continues its attempts to dox every actual person involved (Note: Stop doing that!)
Still, it’s not hard to see why Baby Reindeer has invoked such a passionate reaction in viewers. The story is an intensely personal one for Gadd and oftentimes, the more personal something is, the more universal its appeal becomes. Not everyone can directly relate to Gadd’s traumatic experience of being stalked, but everyone knows what pain, confusion, and fear looks like.

Mae Martin, star of Netflix’s Feel Good series, is set to host a Canadian Screen Awards one-hour special in late May.
The country’s national film and TV awards for the second year running will not be broadcast or streamed live this year, as happened pre-pandemic. Instead, Martin will emcee a live-to-tape one-hour special filled with celebrity interviews and highlights from prize-giving during CSA award shows held in private and in person in Toronto.
“I am elated to be hosting this celebration of all the amazing talent in Canada, and plan on asking a lot of people I admire for selfies,” Martin said in a statement about her hosting duties. Last year’s Canadian Screen Awards TV special was hosted by fellow Canadian Samantha Bee.
Born and raised in Toronto, Martin as a comedian, actor, writer, and producer currently hosts the comedy podcast Handsome, alongside Tig Notaro and Fortune Feimster.

Oscar winner Octavia Spencer (Truth Be Told) and Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) are set to star in and executive produce a new comedy series from creator Tessa Coates (Feel Good). In a highly competitive situation with multiple bidders, the as-yet-untitled series from Skydance Television has landed at Prime Video with a straight-to-series order.
The 8-episode series, based on an original pitch from Coates, follows two best friends, Judith (Waddingham) and Debbie (Spencer), who know everything about each other—or do they? Unbeknownst to Debbie, Judith has been living a double life as a highly trained assassin. When a hit goes horribly wrong, the pair must go on the run together and work to repair their broken friendship—all while being targeted by a mysterious enemy who wants them dead.
Skydance Television produces in collaboration with Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s Double Dream and Spencer’s Orit Entertainment.

Consider this Thelma & Louise meets Jack Ryan.
Amazon, following an intensive bidding war, has landed the action-adventure show starring Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer with an eight-episode, straight-to-series order.
The untitled show is based on an original idea from Tessa Coates (Feel Good) that was taken out to six of the major streamers, four of which bought the show while in the room and with the others also making offers before Amazon emerged the victor, prompting the pitch to the seventh streamer to be canceled. The series was one of few new original scripted ideas that generated multiple offers in what many Hollywood insiders say has been an unusually quiet marketplace after the writers strike.
Ted Lasso Emmy winner Waddingham and The Help Oscar winner Octavia Spencer will star as best friends Judith and Debbie, respectively, who work to repair their friendship after Debbie learns Judith is a highly trained assassin.

If the expectation for holiday season programming is treacle and sentiment, Hulu’s new comedy Such Brave Girls is like a scorpion in your stocking.
In a good way.
Coming in just under the wire to cement creator-star Kat Sadler as one of the year’s breakthrough talents, Such Brave Girls is a hilarious slice of family dysfunction, focusing on a trio of women whose only connection is their trauma and, you know, shared DNA.
Especially in the first half of its six-episode run, it would be possible to reject Such Brave Girls as repetitively narcissistic, when the truth is that it’s more accurately a spin on a familiar type of British comedy, one populated by characters defined exclusively by their damage. It’s a genre in which the best examples are shows like Fleabag or Feel Good and the worst are lost to the cultural scrapheap.
Hopefully, thanks...

Feelgood documentary follows Justin Hawkins’ band as they give even the smallest venues a Wembley Arena level performance
This documentary gives us an entertaining “comeback” narrative arc for the Darkness, the British neo glam-rock band with outrageous campy stylings, sparkly catsuits and real songwriting talent. For a couple of years in the early 00s they were absolutely gigantic, and then crashed and burned, apparently due to lead singer Justin Hawkins’ abuse of drink and drugs. Those were the days when everyone didn’t automatically make solemnly supportive noises about recovery and looking after your mental health: there was more ironic dismissal of addiction burnout as a symptom of rock’n’roll selfishness and absurdity.
But recently, Justin reconciled with his brother, lead guitarist Dan, and the band got back together with bassist Frankie Poullain and a new drummer, Rufus Taylor (son of Queen’s Roger Taylor); they started slogging around...

With the new series Colin From Accounts — streaming on Paramount+ following a Foxtel/Binge debut in its native Australia — creator/stars Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer have set themselves possibly one of the most difficult challenges in the history of romantic comedies.
How do you make a show in which, within the first five minutes, the main characters are responsible for running over an adorable dog and, by the end of eight episodes, have the audience liking those characters, if not necessarily rooting for their coupling?
The answer comes down to clever writing and the chemistry between Brammall and Dyer, who are married in addition to their collaborations here. Colin From Accounts never wholly shakes its “They ran over a dog!” bleakness — the dog, it should be emphasized clearly, is mostly Ok — nor does it wholly break out from the rom-com conventions it’s so keenly aware of. But it...

Sharon Van Etten shared a new single called “Close to You,” which she co-wrote with Courtney Barnett for the official soundtrack to the upcoming Apple Original drama series The Buccaneers.
Equal parts eerie and alluring, “Close to You” sees Van Etten infuse her classic Americana-inspired rock with a heavy wash of dreamy reverb, cooing lines like: “I got a taste of being with you, don’t wanna waste more time,” “put on your best dress and get out of your head,” and “get away and I’ll stay close to you.”
The song was produced by Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa, who also produced the entire soundtrack: “It was a truly incredible experience working with this group of uniquely talented artists,” she said in a press release. “Everyone brought their A-game and taught me something invaluable about the creative process. Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson delivered an emotional speech while recalling breaking out at the Just For Laughs festival in 2017 before returning this year to Montreal to pick up the top comedy award in front of a roomful of fellow comics and industry execs.
“This is crazy. It’s wild to be in front of all your comedy heroes,” Brunson said when accepting the best comedy person award at the Just For Laughs ComedyPro conference on Friday. She recounted being part of the New Faces comic discovery program in 2017 at Just For Laughs.
“I was doing a lot of work just to get here, to get to what I considered real comedy. I wanted to get to TV, I wanted to get to film. I was doing stand-up and I was putting in the work and I love comedy. So it was an honor to be recognized back then,” Brunson said.

In December 2022, the critically acclaimed, mega-successful stage musical based on Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book Matilda came to cinemas translated into a punchy, inventive feature film. Written by playwright and screenwriter Dennis Kelly with songs and lyrics by comedian and writer Tim Minchin (Upright), the musical – like the book – is a terrific blend of poignancy and rebellious satire.
Famously adapted for a 1996 American feature film starring writer Mara Wilson in the title role, Matilda is the story of an extraordinary young girl born into a neglectful family who are unable to see, or appreciate her uniqueness. Matilda Wormwood isn’t just an academic genius, and when she goes up against the cruel, child-hating headmistress Miss Trunchbull, she uses her powers to right a generational wrong.
The new film retains the original musical’s anarchic heart, chiefly by retaining its director Matthew Warchus, who pulled the whole thing together...

If there’s one thing we’re not short of on this strange little island, it’s funny people. When life is good, we’re laughing. When things get weird, we’re laughing. And when everything falls apart, somehow we’re still laughing.
From top bants to gallows humour, you can always rely on the British to bring the LOLs, and from Charlie Chaplin through to Monty Python and Fleabag, British comedy seems to translate pretty well worldwide too, meaning there’s plenty on offer on Netflix.
So if you’re sick of rewatching the same old sitcoms and looking for fresh laughs, we recommend these British comedy hidden gems on Netflix:
[All the following are available on both US and UK Netflix, unless stated]

For most of us, an Std probably wouldn’t be our first choice for the basis of a sitcom, but that’s why Lovesick is so genius: it takes a usually no-laughing-matter concept and stuffs it full of refreshing honesty,...

Joan is Awful is the first episode of the sixth season of Black Mirror. It is written by Charlie Brooker, directed by Ally Pankiw and stars Salma Hayek, Annie Murphy, and Michael Cera.
This episode is more amusing than terrifying and features Salma Hayek (who mocks her own diction) playing an actress in a series that parodies itself. It is a charming and humorous episode that serves as an excellent appetizer for this sixth season.
Did you expect Charlie Brooker not to take AI beyond imagination? Wait until the end of the episode, where his idea of personalized content for Netflix is quite curious and, although comedic, also frightening.

The films were Ok but lacked some luster on the whole. The list of winners of the festival(s) follows. Women filmmakers swept most of the top awards from Competition to Un Certain Regard and Critics’ Week. The market was also Ok, but not great. Rights sold before the festival and during the festival are listed with the winning titles.
The disrupters, the big streamers, were in the background and theatrical rights were being acquired by indie distributors. France’s theatrical exhibition has sprung back to its pre-covid levels while others’ like Germany, Italy and the U.S. remain 30% below.
Read The Film Verdict Summation and Reviews of Cannes Ff 2003 here. Their summation in part:
The most common line heard on the Croisette was that the main section was stuffed with minor films from major directors, which does no one any favors. But there were happy exceptions, which included 83-year-old Marco Bellocchio’s dramatically exciting and thought-provoking Kidnapped, a summing-up of his many films dealing with the Catholic religion and how a child’s cultural identity is created beginning at a young age. Disappointingly, the jury led by two-time Palme d’Or winner Ruben Ostlund overlooked the film entirely when they awarded their prizes.Another classic director who returned in top form was 77-year-old Wim Wenders with two masterful films: Anselm, a ravishing 3D documentary portrait of artist Anselm Kiefer, and Perfect Days, a lyrical Japanese-language character study of a Tokyo toilet attendant. Justly winning the Best Actor prize for his Zen-like performance in the latter title was Koji Yakusho.Cannes Film Festival Winners:

Prime Video Australia is remaking The Office as a female-led comedy starring stand-up Felicity Ward in the role Ricky Gervais first made famous.
Gervais’ David Brent will become Hannah Howard in the series, with Ward putting her own spin on bad team management at packaging company Flinley Craddick. When she gets news from Head Office that they will be shutting down her branch and making everyone work from home, she goes into survival mode, making promises she can’t keep in order to keep her ‘work family’ together.
Ward is best known as a stand-up and for ABC series Spicks and Specks and The Ronnie Johns Half Hour. She also appeared in Wakefield and The Inbetweeners.
Additional cast includes Edith Poor (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Power of the Dog), Steen Raskopoulos (The Duchess, Feel Good), Shari Sebbens (The Sapphires, Thor: Love and Thunder), Josh Thomson...

Let’s get the awkwardness out of the way first, shall we? The answer is yes, it definitely Was a throw. No further questions, thank you.
Mae Martin’s Taskmaster performance has been solid gold so far, from the hilarious #throwgate controversy in the drumming challenge to teaching us how to play the double bass with your toes, and introducing an excellent new way of pronouncing the word “humiliated”.
If you thought all that was impressive, just wait until you discover this award-winning Canadian comedian’s other work (spoiler alert: it’s very very good):
Mae Martin’s TV Comedy Career Actually Started 20 Years Ago
An adorably geeky 16-year-old Mae appeared on Canadian award show Cream of Comedy back in 2003 after becoming the youngest ever nominee for the show’s prize. They didn’t win, but their excellent Buffy The Vampire Slayer-themed set was a good sign of things to come.

The ’80s and ’90s were a tumultuous time for rock music, especially for Mötley Crüe. Lead singer Vince Neil infamously left the band in 1992. He says that when he was fired, he was in “complete shock.” But one Mötley Crüe member recalls Neil’s departure differently.

Neil joined Mötley Crüe in 1981 after the band saw him perform with the group Rock Candy. Drummer Tommy Lee had known Neil from high school and encouraged his bandmates to check Neil out, sure the singer’s image would match Mötley Crüe.
The group released its debut album, Too Fast for Love, in 1981, but it wasn’t an overnight success. The album was self-produced and sold only 20,000 copies. The bandmates...
