Unicorn Wars: "It’s Bambi meets Apocalypse Now in this provocative and strangely beautiful horror comedy from acclaimed filmmaker and illustrator Alberto Vazquez (Birdboy: The Forgotten Children), who uses its outrageous candy-colored premise to explore religious zealotry, the tortured legacies of military fascism, and the depths of the soul.
For ages, teddy bears have been locked in an ancestral war against their sworn enemy, the unicorns, with the promise that victory will complete the prophecy and usher in a new era. Aggressive, confident teddy bear Bluet and his sensitive, withdrawn brother Tubby could not be more different. As the rigors and humiliation of teddy bear bootcamp turn to the psychedelic horrors of a combat tour in the Magic Forest, their complicated history and increasingly strained relationship will come to determine the fate of the entire war."

Yellow Veil Pictures announced today they have boarded world sales on Blackout, Larry Fessenden’s werewolf horror film that’s currently in post-production, and have released the first teaser poster. The film wrapped principal photography in the fall in New York’s Hudson Valley and will hit the festival circuit later this year.
Blackout marks the second pairing of Glass Eye Pix, the New York production shingle headed by Fessenden, and Yellow Veil Pictures, having previously collaborated successfully on world sales for Fessenden’s 2019 Depraved, which was released by IFC Midnight in the US to great acclaim.
The film follows a fine-arts painter convinced he is a werewolf wreaking havoc on a small American town every full moon. It is the latest addition to Fessenden’s own Monsterverse, along with his breakout feature, the vampire-themed Independent Spirit Award-Winning feature Habit (1995) and 2019’s Frankenstein riff, Depraved.

Epicureanism has come to be associated with mindless indulgence in food and sex, even if those ancient Athenians called for more restraint than you’d typically see in your average horror movie.
Countless horror films, of course, have echoed cultural anxieties surrounding sex, but that other physiological need, food, is also a common ingredient. Poor impulse control is at the heart of every slasher film—usually the perp acting on his, but also the risk-taking behaviors of his victims. And it’s not much of a stretch to consider that there’s a genetic component to this, whether manifested in psychopathy or an inability to keep the fridge door shut.
According to a Bloomberg report, 2015 was the first year Americans spent more on dining out than on groceries, as at-home food prep shows proliferate and the real-life horror that is the obesity epidemic shaves years off our lives. Luckily, amidst...

Larry Fessenden has been one of the most important figures in indie horror over the last decade. Not only does he lend his acting talent to movies like You're Next, Jug Face and Session 9, but his company Glass Eye Pix produced The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers, Bitter Feast, Stake Land, and many, many more. He's basically been a bit of a godsend to many young filmmakers looking to make the kinds of horror movies Hollywood doesn't. Fessenden is also a director in his own right, and his latest film hit Blu-ray and DVD this week. It's called Beneath, and it's about a group of friends who find themselves trapped on a lake by a giant, man-eating fish. And if that premise sounds delightfully old school to you, you'll be happy to know the production is as...

Director Adam Wingard has received rave reviews for his R-rated, home invasion horror-comedy You’re Next, which screened at several film festivals over the past couple of years and will be released August 23. But his often gore-drenched creative sensibility — and twisted sense of humor — is not everyone’s cup of Darjeeling. In the spring of 2007, for instance, the then just the 24-year-old Wingard appeared on the premiere episode of Fox TV’s On The Lot, a much-hyped but now little-remembered, Steven Spielberg-produced filmmakers’ competition with the first prize of a million-dollar development deal at Dreamworks. As Wingard recalls, he...

Three horror vets join Alfonso Gomez-Rejon's remake of the 1976 slasher film The Town That Dreaded Sundown. The film is based on the true story of a serial killer that stalked a small Texas town in 1946. At least five people were killed and the perpetrator was never caught. Addison Timlin (Derailed, Zero Hour) has already been cast as the headliner. Joining her are Veronica Cartwright, Gary Cole, and Joshua Leonard.
Cartwright will play Timlin's grandmother, who raises her after her parents are killed in a car accident. In a career spanning over 50 years, Cartwright has had many roles in genre films, including The Birds, Alien, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Candyman: Farewell to Flesh.
Cole will play a deputy who is chasing the hooded killer. Cole is probably best known for his role in Office Space, but to me, he will always be Lucas Buck from American Gothic.

Director Adam Wingard hit the horror scene running with his feature film debut Home Sick back in 2007 which centered around a maniac with razors, a super human killing machine attacking a group of unsuspecting teens and featured performances from genre favorites including Bill Moseley, Tom Towles and Tiffany Shepis.

Danielle Harris defends herself against post-apocalyptic vampires in Stake Land.
Directed and co-written by Jim Mickle (Mulberry Street), Stake Land finds America being overrun by an epidemic of vampirism, similar to Daybreakers. With cities falling apart and a slowly dwindling population of humans on the run from a growing number of vicious vampires, the future isn’t looking too bright in Stake Land. Emerging from this nightmare is a teenager named Martin (Connor Paolo, TV’s Gossip Girl), who subsequently meets a collection of post-apocalyptic survivors, including a grizzled hunter (Nick Damici,...

Already acquired by Mpi Media Group (Dark Sky Films), the boys over at Twitch have scored an exclusive look at the Cannes sales trailer for James Felix McKenney's Hypothermia, the latest genre effort from producers Glass Eye Pix (Innkeepers, Stake Land, House of the Devil, Roost, Satan Hates You, I Sell the Dead, Bitter Feast and dozens more. Starring Michael Rooker, Blanche Baker, Greg Finley, Don Wood, Ben Forster and Amy Chang, imagine Jaws under the ice, imagine terror at 20 degrees below freezing... "In a remote winter hideaway devoid of any sign of life, two unsuspecting families on an ice-fishing vacation discover something sinister lurking in the frozen lake. One thing is for certain - the creature is hungry and the only prey left is human." Hypothermia is a classic monster movie in the tradition of The Creature from the Black Lagoon.

A lead from Step Up 3D, Aj Bowen, Larry Fessenden and more make an already exciting home invasion film a bit more intriguing.
Director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett, who’s previous collaboration A Horrible Way To Die has received a ton of high praise, have re-teamed for You’re Next. The film sees “the Davison family come under attack from a terrifying group of sadistic murderers during a family reunion getaway. Barricaded in their secluded vacation home, they fight off a barrage of axes, crossbows and machetes from both inside and outside the house. However, the masked killers didn’t count on Erin, the young girlfriend of the eldest Davison son whose mysterious past has made her very difficult to kill.”
Beginning principal photography today, the production has added Step Up 3D and Bait’s Sharni Vinson as Erin. She’ll co-star alongside a varied ensemble cast that includes filmmaker/producer/actor Fessenden,...

Welcome back to the last installment of Dread Central’s look back at the 25 milestones that shaped the landscape of independent horror filmmaking over the last 100 years. I apologize for the delay on the last five milestones as I had no idea just how busy I’d be while in Austin covering the South by Southwest Film Festival (which also champions the independent spirit of filmmaking most of the time) so I am glad to be back now and have the opportunity to pay homage to these last five moments in indie horror history.
We’ve already celebrated 20 milestones through 1987, and today we start in 1999 with one of the most innovative independent modern horror films that not only acted as a game changer in the horror genre but also was one of the first movies to effectively use the Internet as a marketing tool.

After removing his tongue and murdering his friends in 1999′s horror sensation The Blair Witch Project, actor Joshua Leonard seemed to get lost in the woods himself. In recent years, however, Leonard has become a darling of the indie scene, starring in Humpday and Bitter Feast, in addition to directing his own film The Lie, which is close to grabbing a distribution deal.

The Playlist reports today that Joshua Leonard (Humpday,Bitter Feast) has joined the cast of Motel Life directred by Alan and Gabriel Polsky.
Leonard will star opposite Dakota Fanning, Emile Hirsch and Stephen Dorff in the thriller based on the novel by Willy Vlautin. The story follows a fatal hit-and-run accident and was penned by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster. Production on the film is already underway.
Leonard just premiered his directorial debut The Lie at Sundance this year. The film's about a man who’s stuck working at an unfulfilling job, while he dreams of a career as a musician. Unable to take another day at work he tells a lie that changes everything. We’re told that a distribution deal for the film is just around the corner. One of the ways the Spirit Awards has continued to celebrate what's new and next has been by honoring genre films that are typically overlooked when it comes to year-end ceremonies and top ten lists. After all, what other non-genre specific awards show would've had the gumption to put up "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" for Best Feature as the Spirits did in 1995? Yet that surprising nod shouldn't come as all that surprising to those who have followed the Spirit Awards through the years, where horror and sci-fi have long been an integral part of the proceedings, not only to highlight what's been the best for a particular year, but what new voices are on the horizon.
Naturally, the Best First Feature category has been a hotbed for filmmakers who quickly make their mark with genre films. Although audiences didn't immediately embrace Richard Kelly's time-travel drama "Donnie Darko" in 2002, the...

It’s been a long time coming, but there’s finally a horror movie for all you foodies out there. Bitter Feast, a delectable tale of terror from director Joe Maggio, is a smart, stylish flick that might easily be confused for that hip indie film showing down at the local art house — if it wasn’t, you know, for all the torture.
Peter Gray (James LeGros) is a minor celebrity chef whose arrogance has been playing havoc with the ratings of his cable cooking program. He seems to think his audience wants to be educated rather than entertained, and his pompous posturing is dimming his once bright future. A scathing review from malicious, tastemaking food blogger J.T. Franks (Joshua Leonard) is the last straw. Gray snaps and kidnaps Franks, forcing him...

Rating (out of 5): **
What a collection of talent is gathered here: writer/directorJoe Maggio, who gave us the wonderful Virgil Bliss (2001) and the interesting Paper Covers Rock (2008); a cast of indie pros like James Le Gros, who’s coming up on a 30-year career of mostly independent film and TV, in which he’s always good and often charismatic; Joshua Leonard, so different here from his work in last year’s Humpday; the lovely Amy Seimetz, currently on a roll, after Alexander the Last, Tiny Furniture and Open Five; and producer/co-starLarry Fessenden, who’s always fun to watch ( I Sell the Dead, Wendy and Lucy) and whose production company Glass Eye Pix has given us some wonderful little “scare” movies of late. The result of all this talent blended into a chef-gets-revenge-on-food-critic thriller (in which even Mario Batali makes an appearance) is the disappointing Bitter Feast.

It wasn’t until I started this spiffy column here at Beyond Hollywood that I realized just how many direct-to-video movies I consume on a weekly basis. The figures are staggering, and suggest that I might need to find something else to do with my free time should the contents of my skull begin to revolt. This week’s offerings are all pretty snazzy, though some are clearly more satisfying than others. What’s most surprising about this particular collection of moving pictures is that the strongest comes from none other than Steven Seagal, who shows marked improvement with his latest Dtv offering. Without further ado, here’s what I’ve been watching lately. Bitter Feast If we’re being brutally honest with each other here — and I like to think that we are — the only reason I decided to sit down with writer/director Joe Maggio’s 2010 torture horror...

'Bitter Feast,' starring James LeGros and Joshua Leonardnow, is now on DVD. Described as a tongue-in-cheek culinary horror satire, this twisted treat looks to satiate the palates of movie lovers sidelining as foodies.
Revenge is on the menu for notorious blogger J.T. Franks ('The Blair Witch Project') when he publishes a rumor which leads to the demise of TV chef Peter Grey's culinary empire. Grey ('Zodiac,' TV's 'Mercy') kidnaps the writer, confines him in a remote cabin and presents him with a series of deceptively simple food challenges - from preparing a perfect egg over-easy, to grilling a steak precisely medium rare - punishing him for anything less than total perfection. Bitter Feast is an exploration of the creative impulse gone tragically and ferociously awry. Indie horror icon Larry Fessenden and renowned chef Mario Batali co-star in this tense shocker,...

Chicago – New York filmmaker Joe Maggio is fascinated by the pursuit of redemption, particularly in stories featuring characters who may not entirely be worthy of it. His 2001 debut feature “Virgil Bliss” followed a man fresh out of prison as he attempted to build a new life. Maggio’s 2008 drama “Paper Covers Rock” told the story of a suicidal mother who fights to maintain custody of her daughter.
The darkly satirical thriller “Bitter Feast” marks Maggio’s darkest tale to date. Redemption hardly seems possible for vitriolic food blogger Jt Franks (Joshua Leonard), as he finds himself held hostage by Peter Gray (James LeGros), the self-righteous yet deranged celebrity chef whose restaurant he panned. Gray acquires delicious revenge by forcing Franks to cook various dishes to perfection…or else. Hollywood Chicago spoke with Maggio about his own thoughts concerning modern criticism, the advantages and disadvantages of microbudget filmmaking, and the New...

I have this thing about cooking shows. The "thing" is that I love them. Although I continue to remain dubious about how well a challenge concerning cooking with no utensils really tests the chef, I can't help but be completely enraptured by them. Maybe it's because food is so interesting and versatile that it can be at once extremely delicious, and terrifyingly awful. It's unpredictable, surprising and always makes for great TV--and now that the promising nature of Food TV has made its transition to horror, I couldn't be more pleased.
The direct to video Bitter Feast follows a TV chef named named Peter Gray (James LeGros) whose show gets cancelled. Then he gets fired from his restaurant and loses his lucrative deal involving cookware. This is partially due to food blogger J.T. Franks (Joshua Leonard) who accidentally leaks the bitter end of Gray's show and inevitably his career. In an act of unwarranted craziness,...

Sometimes the desire for revenge is so strong you can taste it, and that’s certainly the case in Bitter Feast, the co-production of Larry Fessenden’s Glass Eye Pix and Dark Sky Films that hits DVD from the latter company this week. Drawing inspiration from a dismissive restaurant review in The New York Times, independent writer/director Joe Maggio took a step away from his usual relationship dramas to create a sharp suspense shocker of culinary payback. Fango sat down with Maggio to discuss the ingredients that went into the film.

"Bitter Feast"

When a food critic ("Humpday"'s Justin Leonard) takes a butcher knife to the restaurant of a celebrity chef (James LeGros), the chef plots the ultimate revenge in this gory satirical thriller from director Joe Maggio. (My review from the Los Angeles Film Festival is here.)
"Case 39"

2010 is probably a year best forgotten by Renee Zellweger, who not only appeared in the execrable "My Own Love Song," which went straight to Netflix, but also this thriller that was filmed in 2006, but didn't see a release until last fall. Zellweger stars as a social worker whose latest case involving a child (Jodelle Ferland) that she believes is a victim of abuse leads to something far more terrifying. Welcome to 2011! The doldrums of last week have been left far behind, and the powers that be have returned from the break to release a torrent of titles onto DVD and Blu-ray. There’s nothing truly great out this week, but there are at least two titles entertaining enough to buy. There are also a couple surprising ones to avoid, but as usual the bulk of this week’s new titles fit comfortably in the nether region between the two extremes. Which of course means they should be added to your Netflix queue… Titles out this week include Robert Rodriguez’ ridiculous action romp (Machete), Joe Maggio’s foodie abduction thriller (Bitter Feast), the other social media movie of the year (Catfish), a mediocre remake of a very funny French film (Dinner For Schmucks), and more! Click on any of the titles below to magically head over to Amazon.com and pick up the DVD. And...

Whoa, what a way to start the new year! After several weeks of desolate conditions in terms of horror title releases, the floodgate just burst open.
This is the week you may want to think about using up those giftcards and cash you got from returning your holiday presents. Major releases are vying for your greenbacks alongside re-releases in Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D (in case Santa brought you a 3D TV recently), and other more independent titles. In addition to movies, there's also a Buffy motion comic and the next volume of a vampire's diary in paperback.

Robert Rodriguez's neo-grindhouse opus, Machete, slashes its way onto store shelves this week. I never actually got a chance to see this one in theatres as I was in the south of France when it came out, so I'm looking forward to finally catching up with it. People seemed to really dig it.
Another film I'm looking forward to checking out is Last Exorcism produced by Eli Roth. This is one that really divided audiences, but some bloggers I know defend it constantly, often calling it the scariest film in year.
Christian Alvart's Case 39 - which was held back for years - finally hits after a quiet time at theatres. I've seen this one and I can tell you that Alvart does a lot with what is a fairly derivitive idea. Worth a Netflix at any rate.

There are at least three major horror releases coming out this week, with Bitter Feast, The Last Exorcism and Case 39. Some will cringe at these titles, while others will jump in horrific delight. The independent feature Bitter Feast from director Joe Maggio releases January 4th on DVD and Blu-Ray. This is a tale of revenge, as one chef gives a scathing food critic and blogger his just desserts. This film will release through Dark Sky Films. Other films also release January 4th.
The Eli Roth (Hostel) produced The Last Exorcism did very well at the box office considering its meager $2 million price tag. Yet, movie critics have been ambivalent, with comments like "a nice surprise" (San Francisco Chronicle), "[the film] is thoroughly engrossing until it loses its way about three-quarters in" (USA Today), and "the film’s docu-style and credible improv acting lay the foundation for an eerie and believable horror movie" (Chicago Tribune). We just received an e-mail regarding a new horror film that we thought you might want to check out. It’s called Bitter Feast, and it comes out on DVD and On-Demand next Tuesday, January 4th. I noticed a really familiar name in the cast, James LeGros, the same guy who played Mike in Phantasm II.
“An angry foodie develops a taste for violence in this darkly witty thriller from writer and director Joe Maggio. But while he knows food, Peter is also pompous, self-righteous and convinced he’s smarter than everyone around him; Peter wants “The Feast” to carry a responsible environmental message,...
