“Tatara Samurai”, written and directed by Yoshinari Nishikori, takes an interesting approach to the samurai genre by telling the story not of a samurai, but of a man whose profession is to be the village Murage, in charge of producing the steel. Through various twists of fate, he is led on a journey of discovery about what true strength means.
Tatara Samurai is screening at the 19th Japan Film Fest Hamburg
The small village of Tatara is renowned for its steel production. The Murage is a respected position, the one who oversees production of this precious metal. The protagonist Gosuke (Sho Aoyagi) is due to inherit his father’s title of Murage, but longs instead to leave the village and become a samurai. When a trader named Yohei (Masahiko Tsugawa) comes to the village with news of Oda Nobunaga’s army and the recent invention of the guns that are said to revolutionise war,...

While action blockbusters come a dime a dozen this time of year (just see this week’s big release of the, admittedly great, Wonder Woman), foreign language action pictures are far less common. Even more rare? A return to one of the genres that helped cement Japanese cinema as the juggernaut it truly is.
Hitting theaters this week is the new film from director Yoshinari Nishikori, a samurai epic entitled Tatara Samurai. The latest release from boutique La-based distributor Eleven Arts, Tatara Samurai introduces us to Gosuke, a blacksmith-in-training who is caught in the middle of an oncoming war when he begins to train for battle. Caught not only in the middle of a war but of evolving warfare, Gosuke must fight as part of the Oda Army to keep his titular hometown safe while also watching as the war around him sees the introduction of firearms into the fray.
