One of the biggest factors I've found to influence how well they turn out is the quality of the paste I use. Having a more fluid texture paste than I use with other designs helps a lot. Either use a texture paste that is already fluid by design, or make your paste more fluid by mixing in some acrylic paint. Use a plaster comb (sometimes also known as a notched trowel) with relatively narrow teeth.
