This is a one of my all-time favorite projects! The lesson plan includes vocabulary, lesson objectives, a rubric, a supply list, and teacher instructions as well as step-by-step visual student instructions. The student instructions can be uploaded online for virtual learning or handed out to students in person, and each step has detailed instructions and high quality photographs to ensure understanding. Students will learn how to create a coil pot with proper technique and even coils. They will also learn how to sculpt realistic facial features, in order to create a face pot inspired by the work of enslaved African American potters during the Antebellum period before the Civil War. This is a great way for students to learn about African American culture, as well as part of the tragic history of our nation. Students will reflect on the origins of face pottery, learn about a specific potter, David Drake, and create a pot of their own. This is such a fun lesson that my students have loved because they get to give their sculpted faces personality! Visit the blog post about this lesson here.
