If you are starting with a small goldfish, like a feeder fish, then starting with a small fishbowl less than 5 gallons should work fine. Some goldfish live happily in 3-5 gallon bowls their entire lives, but ideally, an adult goldfish should be kept in a bowl that is at least 10 gallons.

Goldfish can survive in a bowl without a filter, but this setup means you need to clean the bowl daily. A tank with a filter is better for the goldfish and requires much less work to maintain it. Be sure to treat tap water with a water conditioner for goldfish when you change the water.
