How to Gelli Print with Leaves

Gelli plate printing with leaves is a fun and easy technique that lets us get outside to find beautiful textures. Summer in Canada is short. So, I make a point to get outside and incorporate nature in my art journal and gelli plate printing projects. Today I am sharing my favorite techniques for Gelli plate

Baby oil best for cleaning plate after. THE DETAILS: 1 - Start with a very dark charcoal drawing and DO NOT spray it with fixative. You want the dark, flaky, unstable charcoal to stick to the plate. I’m using a 16 x 20 inch @gelliarts plate in the reel. You can use any size. I haven’t yet tried this with pastel. I’m imagining it would work but I wanted something very dark to maximize impact. 2 - I used newsprint for the charcoal drawing and to lift the transfer off the plate. I haven’t yet experimented with other papers. Using alcohol inks on a gel plate isn't something I do a lot, I think this is only the second or third time I am trying. Alcohol Ink dries really fast, so there are loads of fun techniques you do with them. If you don't have alcohol inks, you can use alcohol based markers to doodle on your gel plate and pull your print the same way with acrylic paint! Keep in mind that alcohol ink can stain your gel plate, but that's completely OK! It won't affect how it prints in the future 😉 Have you tried alcohol inks on a gel plate?
