Dance: here we see a picture of some whiling dervishes in the middle of the ceremony .This type of ceremony is called a sema. in the sema the dervishes go into a meditation in which they spin around for a long time .they are more know on the west side of turkey because that’s when they appeared in the 12 century. When they were first found this dance was for religious porpoises only but after a while they started to become a large tourist attraction in turkey . Whirling Dervishes at the Galata Mevlevihanesi - Istanbul For 91 Days

With their heads slightly tilted, arms raised in exaltation and spinning in graceful circles, the whirling sufi dervishes are among the most enduring images of Turkey. Istanbul boasts a number of places in which to catch a ceremony, but we chose to attend the twice-monthly performance in the Galata Mevlevihanesi; the city's oldest tekke.

Sufi whirling is a form of Sama, physically active meditation - originated among Sufis, and which is still practiced by the Sufi Dervishes of the Mevlevi order. It is a customary dance performed within the Sema, or worship ceremony, through which dervishes (also called semazens) aim to reach the source of all perfection, or kemal. This is sought through abandoning one's nafs, egos or personal desires, by listening to the music, focusing on God, and also symbolic of solar system orbiting the sun.
