  1. Global timer resolution requests (Windows 11)

    The behaviour of the timer resolution on Windows changed with the release of Windows 10 v2004 to be per-process instead of system-wide as previously. This resulted in processes not setting a specific timer resolution on their own falls back to using the default timer resolution of 15.625ms (64 Hz) which can have various effects in games which were developed with the mistaken assumption of the timer resolution being much higher. An example of a common issue of a game using the default timer resolution is an unexpected 64 FPS cap/limit.
    Windows 11 received the ability to restore the previous behaviour through a registry value, which is attached here. As far as I am aware this option is not available on Windows 10.
     
    Instructions:
    1. Download the appropriate registry file.
    2. Open the registry file to add it to the registry of Windows.
    3. Restart the system to allow the change to take effect.
    After the restart the timer resolution will be set system-wide again as in Windows 10 v1909 or older.

    These are two presentations about Games for Windows LIVE's protection measures (anti-cheat, anti-piracy) that was given by Arka Ray in 2010. These mentions the various modules that makes up the protection measures available in GFWL, as well as details examples of how GFWL's Server-Side Activation (SSA) can be used to limit different levels of content behind activation and a LIVE (now Microsoft) account.
    This is mirrored here for archival purposes as it remains one of the few detailed insights into GFWL's internal workings that can be easily found online in 2022.

  5. Control - Blurry textures fix

    Description:
    The mod makes the texture streaming more aggressive. There is also an optional config that also loads high-resolution textures sooner and increases the texture pool from 1 GB to 2 GB.

    Installation:
    Simply extract the archive to the game folder. The default config only makes the texture streaming more agressive.
    If you also want it to load high-resolution textures sooner, browse to \data\globaldb\ and remove tweakables.xml, then rename tweakables_high_quality.xml to tweakables.xml

    Configs:
    .\data\globaldb\tweakables.xml makes the texture streaming of the game more agressive.
    .\data\globaldb\tweakables_high_quality.xml is an optional file that also loads high-resolution textures sooner. Rename the file to tweakables.xml to have it be applied.

  6. Mad Max - No Intro Mod

    Instructions
    Download this 'no intro' mod. Unpack the contents of the archive to <path-to-game>\archive_win64\ Run MadMax_NoIntro.bat In the menu, select 5 to extract the original intro movie (this is required). Next select 1 to remove the intro movies. Launch the game. To restore the intros run the batch file and select 3, or replace game2.arc with the backup that was created in step 4.

  8. Spec Ops: The Line - INI Decrypt/Encrypt Tools (inicrypt.zip)

    These are the decrypt tool Gibbed.SpecOpsTheLine.IniDecrypt.exe and encrypt tool Gibbed.SpecOpsTheLine.IniEncrypt.exe created by Rick/Gibbed (Twitter, GitHub) back in 2012 and first made public in this XeNTaX forum thread and retrieved as archived by Wayback Machine in December of 2015.
    Kudos to LowSpecGamer whom documented the Wayback Machine archive link on his video about the game.
     
    Instructions
    Download the decrypter. Unzip it in a handy folder. Such as %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\SpecOps-TheLine\SRGame\Config\ Open the file you need to edit with Gibbed.SpecOpsTheLine.IniDecrypt.exe (drag-and-drop). Make the changes you want in the now unencrypted file. Save the file. Open the modified file with Gibbed.SpecOpsTheLine.IniEncrypt.exe, thus re-encrypting it.

  9. KonoSuba - Fukkatsu no Beldia - English fan translations

    These are the two English fan translations of Konosuba: Fukkatsu no Beldia (localized as either The Resurrection of Beldia or Verdia of the Resurrection) that is floating around online.
    Download and install just one of them, by extracting the dial.dat file into the data\font\ folder, overwriting the existing file.
    Note that menu items etc are not translated, as those requires binary patching the executable.

    Installing the mod   After downloading the zip file, extract it in your ONINAKI folder.
    Example C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\ONINAKI Simply double click _install_prompts.bat Done!
    If you don't trust batch files or just want to do it manually:
    Simply move the buttonprompts_pc file over to
    -> ONINAKI\ONINAKI_Data\StreamingAssets\STEAM\ui\platform\pc
      Uninstalling the mod Just double-click _uninstall_prompts.bat or just rename the original file back if you did it manually.  
    OPTIONAL: Changing the pause button
      On PS4, the pause button is touchpad. However, the default controller config has this mapped to Share.
    If you do not care about this, you're done. If you'd like to change this, read on.
    Please note that if you do not change this, in game the pause button will show the touchpad, but it's instead the Share button!
      Connect controller and turn it on.
      Right-click on ONINAKI in your Steam library and select Edit Steam Controller Configuration

      Click on the touchpad mapping (which should say Mouse Button) then change it to:
    Single Button -> Trackpack Click -> SELECT

      Done!

  12. Borderlands (2009) retail SecuROM manual release date check

    The retail copy of Borderlands (2009) uses SecuROM DFA to perform an automatic online-based release date check to prevent pre-release access to the game. The online servers this service relies upon, however, is non-working as of 2019, and this manual tool is required instead.
     
    Instructions:
    These instructions must be performed before the installation of the game is started from the retail disc.
    1. Download and run Borderland-ManualReleaseDateCheck.exe from this page.
    2. The tool should automatically start up at the "Generate Request File" step and prompt you to save a "ActivationRequest.dfa" file.
    3. Click on "Select..." and pick an appropriate location.
    4. Click on "Next". The tool should save the activation request file on the desired location and move unto the next step called "Activate License File". Leave this window open for now.
     
    5. Now open SecuROM's official DFA Manual Activation page in a web browser.
    6. Click on "Browse..." on the website and select the "ActivationRequest.dfa" file you saved using the tool.
    7. Leave the "Serial Number" field empty if your retail copy of Borderlands (2009) didn't come with a serial number (only GOTY-versions did, I believe, and only for the DLCs).
    8. Type in the security code, and click on "Submit Query".
    9. You should be taken on a new web page that says "Your 'ActivationResponse.lic'-file has been created sucessfully" and give you a link do download said license file. Click on the link to download it.
     
    10. Now go back to the SecuROM tool you left at the "Activate License File" step.
    11. Click on "Open..." and select the "ActivationResponse.lic" file that was downloaded from the SecuROM webpage.
    12. Click on "Activate". You should get a message about the activation process being successful. Click on "Next" to close down the tool.
    13. Finally, proceed with the installation of the retail disc copy of Borderlands from the disc.

    Note that this update includes a SecuROM v7.42.0004 protected executable for the game.

    If the controller detection is fixed in an upcoming patch or you want to get rid of it for some other reason, just remove the nativePC folder.
    If you have other mods installed, remove the two files of this mod to keep the other mods intact.

  19. DeathSpank - Thongs of Virtue "Continue Game" Crash Fix

    Description
    This is the "unofficial" fix released by Hothead to solve the "continue Game" crash fix in DeathSpank - Thongs of Virtue. The developers referred to it as "unofficial" since they had not published it to the public branch of the game on Steam when they released it on the game forum. Unfortunately they never got around to do so either.
