Local toughs didn't care for the idea of having an "Indian Lawman" in charge of things and saddled him with the derogatory nickname "Pow-Wow Smith". Unfortunately for Ohiyesa, the name stuck, and after some time, even he began addressing himself as Pow-Wow Smith.
