Synopsis for "The Lost City of Cannon"

Jakita leads to Foxes to the "Lost City of Cannon", an ancient city in the Yucatan dominated by a giant artillery piece known as the Multiversal Cannon. They are attacked by warriors serving the Lords of Order, and although Luke and Jakita are able to fend them off fairly easily, one of them takes Lucius hostage. Luke surrenders and asks to speak to their leader.

The Outsiders are imprisoned in the city, and while they are waiting a talking cat comes into Luke's cell. The cat reveals herself to be Teekl, the familiar of Klarion the Witch Boy. Through Teekl, Kalrion tells Luke that the Lords of Chaos will free him if he only asks. Teekl disappears as one of the warriors comes in, carrying the Helmet of Fate. Through the Helmet, Nabu explains to Luke that the world exists in a cycle of four ages: order, chaos, conflict and "Kali-Yuga". The cycle allows stories to be told and keeps time and space ordered, but when the cycle is disrupted then reality splinters, creating new universes and new stories. The Lords of Order are dedicated to maintaining the cycle, while the Lords of Chaos want to break it.

The two sides have been battling over the city and the gun, which are apparently naturally occurring, since the prehistoric past; and now that Chaos believes the world has entered the fourth age, it is time for the gun to be fired. If Chaos gains control, they will use the gun to destroy the Prime universe, allowing the rest of the Multiverse to spin off into incoherence; while if Order gets the gun they will destroy every other universe in the Multiverse, eliminating variation and allowing Earth 0 to continue alone in perfectly ordered continuity, at which point the cycle will begin anew. Needless to say, neither of these are good choices from humanity's perspective.

Luke asks Teekl to free them and the Outsiders run for the exit. They find the Lords of Order and Lords of Chaos, lead by Klarion, battling in the next room and so sidestep the fight by travelling through a series of disused chambers. They emerge outside just under the cannon, where the two sides have squared off for the final battle. Refusing to let either side have the cannon, Luke calls in the Carrier and announces that he is taking the cannon to prevent either of them using it, and if they try to stop him he will unleash every weapon the Carrier has on the city and destroy it. With no other choice, Klarion and Nabu back down.

The Outsiders take the cannon onboard the Carrier and take the ship back into the Bleed. On the ship they reunite with Batwoman, who tells them about her adventure with Jinny Hex and the cursed gun. Lucius says it can't be a coincidence that they have two guns that can destroy the world, but Luke says they're both safely locked away. However, Jakita goes down to the hold where Jonah Hex's gun is stored and takes it.

Trivia

  • Nabu's words about The Eternal Return, the endless cycle of Death and Rebirth of the Multiverse, heavily resemble those Molly the Keeper told Batman in Justice League (Volume 3) #25 to explain this concept and the hierarchy that it exists between Universe, Multiverse, Hypertime, and the Eternal Return.
  • The name "Lost City of Cannon" is an pun of "canon", and the conflict between the Lords of Order and Chaos is an obvious commentary on arguments within comic book fandom over whether comic books should prioritise maintaining a coherent canon or telling whatever story the creator deems best regardless of continuity errors.
