Disney and The Aquabats[]

The original 1998 pilot for what would eventually become the 2012 television series The Aquabats! Super Show, entitled The Aquabats!, directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, was commissioned by Disney subsidiary Buena Vista Television. Creative differences with Disney eventually led the project to be shelved and disowned by both Disney and The Aquabats alike. A second pilot, entitled The Aquabats in Color! was picked up by Fox Family Channel, but was cancelled upon Disney's acquisition of the network in 2001. The band, which portrays its members as over-the-top, campy superheroes, also features scores of villains and other characters that the band "fights" onstage during its live performances. In light of The Aquabats' multiple struggles with The Walt Disney Company, the band's shows would poke fun at Disney by way of these villains, sometimes portrayed as Disney executives or characters, in the years that followed, usually at venues, such as the House of Blues Anaheim, which was located on Disney property at the Disneyland Resort until its relocation in 2017.

Despite these differences, in the 2005 Walt Disney Pictures superhero comedy film Sky High, real-life Aquabats promotional posters can be seen in the background in some scenes. In the 2014-2015 Marvel Comics series Legendary Star-Lord, protagonist Peter Quill/Star-Lord is depicted as a fan of The Aquabats in Issue #3, singing the band's 1997 song "Super Rad!", along with the ship's computer.
