John Singer Sargent

John Singer Sargent has a gesture-drawing feel to many of his pieces. He uses distinctive marks to separate values. His pieces have a quick, rough marked body and background while the face is very detail orientated. I like the way he captures the softness of the face and skin regardless of the emotions or actions being preformed. In all of his drawings he uses different marks and layering to achieve a large value range.
