Madrid-based design practice Koln Studio has launched a new website depicting its accomplished use of type and layout design. “For me, it is always about content. So if colours help to underline a statement, I use colours. Sometimes I start with a lot of colours and suddenly I realise that they distract from the content, so I remove all of them to work just with black-and-white. Sometimes an artwork feels cold and weak and only by adding the right colours does it reach full power. Every layout is different. Every situation is new.”
Anti-Design defies traditional graphic design norms, discarding established conventions. Its aesthetic is characterised by a loose and unrestricted style, prioritising creativity and impact over structure.
Interesting conceptual use of typography. Set vertically with red highlight and placed over the person's eye, it functions pictographically as dripping blood, with the white highlighted text as a needle. Art-historically, it visually relates to El Lissitzky's "Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge".
