Rate this book
Crime boss Georgio Gambino abducts Sean “Mick” McPherson’s pregnant wife, Emma, and his friend’s two daughters and contracts to sell them and another group of women—some into forced labor, others as sex slaves, and a few for their organs.

Gambino confines three best friends—Mick, a PI; Joe, a homicide detective; and Rafferty, an FBI special agent—to Pines & Quill writing retreat and pits them against each other with a “Mick, if you try to save Emma, I’ll kill Joe’s daughters. Joe, if you try to save your daughters, I’ll kill Emma. And Rafferty, if you help Mick or Joe, I’ll kill your fiancée, Ivy.”

With help from the writers in residence—a fiction novelist, a retired maritime pilot, the granddaughter of a legendary pearl diver, and a prior mountain climber now double-amputee—Mick, Joe, and Rafferty manage to sneak away and journey to Mount Baker, where the captives await transport. Along the way, the three best friends learn the lines they’ll cross to save the people they love.

If I were you I’d try not to get on the wrong side of Laurie Buchanan. Her bio calls her a mixture of Dr Dolittle, Nanny McPhee, and a type-A Buddhist. Judging from her terrific Sean McPherson series she’s a connoisseur of good food and wine, a lover of dogs and the Pacific Northwest, and an excellent source of writing advice quotes.

Sounds harmless, right?

But Buchanan is also able to crawl inside the mind of a sadistic crime boss, plot a series of savage murders, strategize military-type surveillance as well as a kick ass counterattack. She knows weapons too, from guns to knives to bows and arrows and she’s not afraid to use them.

So be wary.

The action starts immediately in her latest installment in the series “Iniquity.” Crime boss Georgio Gambino abducts Sean “Mick” McPherson’s pregnant wife, Emma, and his friend’s two daughters. Then, he confines three best friends—Mick, a PI; Joe, a homicide detective; and Rafferty, an FBI special agent—to Pines & Quill writing retreat and pits them against each other with a warning that if they try to save their loved ones he’ll kill them.

Mick and Emma and the gang at the pen and quill writing retreat seem to be hopelessly boxed in. You’ll get no spoilers from me. You’ll need to read the book to find out what happens. Buchanan keeps the terror level high and the pages turning.

Despite the danger and dead bodies I’d still like to attend this writing retreat. The location is fabulous, the cabins delightful, the food and wine delicious. Sign me up! As long as Buchanan is watching my back.

Book 4 of the Sean McPherson Series: KEEP AN EYE ON THIS AUTHOR!!!!

Once again, Buchanan expertly designs multidimensional characters, professional world building, and pulse-pounding plot. I’m really feeling vested in Mick’s life! I can’t wait to see how this series unfolds. Every book offers something new and a ton of surprises.

INIQUITY by Laurie Buchanan

A Sean McPherson Novel, book 4

This is another superb crime thriller in Laurie Buchanan’s Sean McPherson series. I was finishing book three just as book four was being published, and I could not wait to dive into this book! Reading the other reviews for “Iniquity,” I can see that many reviewers feel like I do about eagerly anticipating the next book in Buchanan's crime thriller series.

Prepare to be pulled into a whirlwind of suspense and revenge. Laurie Buchanan's 'Iniquity' is a fast-paced crime thriller that doesn't let you catch your breath. The author has a knack for probing and describing the minds of her characters, creating a scenario that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Laurie Buchanan is an ace crime thriller author. The author created a gripping plot and wonderful character development that kept me on the edge—as I read page after page! The author masterfully sets the stage, painting a picture of the serene Pines & Quill writing retreat. But lurking beneath this tranquility is a menacing sociopath, Gambino, a mafia crime boss hell-bent on revenge. From the start, Gambino's sociopathic presence sets the stage for a thrilling ride that will leave you wanting to read more.

The stark contrast between peace and threat makes 'Iniquity' a truly absorbing read. The crime thriller revolves around the idyllic writing retreat Pines & Quill. By idyllic, I mean that the nurturing and serene environment has everything a writer and their muse would want for their creative juices to flow. The owners, Niall and Libby, provide divine food creations to nourish and inspire. They pair flavors, texture, local produce and cheeses, and delicate aromas worthy of Michelin ratings. They also create the same atmosphere of beautiful woven scents and essences for their writing guests in each cabin. As masterfully as Buchanan describes and captures the writing retreat, she does that and more in creating the motives and describing the sociopathy of Gambino.

This is the perfect book if you want a read that immerses you in an excellent crime thriller.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all four books in this series, and we are back at the usual location, Pines & Quill, where writers in residence assist our main characters with a situation that has escalated both quickly and badly. Our crime boss has ratcheted things up a notch and the group pulls together to save their friends who are in trouble. I am really enjoying this series, it just keeps getting better and better. The setting is perfect for this as well, and I love these characters who have really grown since the beginning of the series. This book is fine to read as a standalone, but I do recommend reading the other books first.

Thank you to SparkPress and the author for the free copies to review.

Another ARC read.

Mick and his buddies have become the target of a crime lord, and his pregnant wife has been kidnapped for trafficking. As they try to rescue her, they have to work within the rules laid out by this criminal to keep her safe.

This story has potential, but the writing was very amateur IMO and is not a book I would have purchased. It took 30% before the crime took place and there was more information on the day to day activities of other characters than of the victim, criminal, and solution.

Iniquity is another successful entry in Ms. Buchanan's Sean McPherson series. The characters are realistic, relatable, and multi-dimensional and after spending time with them through four books, have become friends I look forward to spending time with. The story is fast-paced, built on close family relationships, the true meaning of loyalty among friends, and men and women who are determined to see justice prevail. There is plenty of suspense, twists and turns, and unexpected revelations, just as I have come to expect from Ms. Buchanan.

I enjoy the touch of romance without graphic scenes and heart-warming family dynamics. All of the characters are wonderful, but I think my favorite must be Hemingway, the beautiful (as I imagine him), fiercely loyal, unstoppable protector of a Great Dane. Sometimes I think I read this series to spend time with him.

Be forewarned when you start any book by Ms. Buchanan; it is quite possible to develop emotional whiplash. One moment you will find yourself laughing out loud, the next sitting with your heart in your throat from the tension and suspense she creates, and then before you know it you have tears running down your face. The mark of a talented writer.

If you haven't read any of the Sean McPherson series, I highly recommend that you do because you are currently missing out. I received a review copy from the author via BookSirens and this is my honest opinion..

Laurie Buchanan does it again, with an edge of your seat thriller that keeps you reading page after page until the book is done. Lots of intrigue and mystery as the evil Gambino continues his quest to end Sean McPherson and those he loves, no matter the cost. His reach is everywhere, and it takes some clever planning and action by everyone at Pines and Quill to fight back. The books flow effortlessly into a continuous story of the family, friends, and writers at Pines and Quill. The descriptions of the area make you feel as though you are right there with the characters, and the food once again sounds incredibly delicious and unlike anything I will ever concoct in my kitchen! As much as I am breathlessly waiting for her next book 'Illusionist', I think a Pines and Quill Cookbook should be in the works as well!

Iniquity is a fast-paced read that took me on a heart-pounding journey, with many characters being of pure goodness and some that are unthinkably evil. As I read, I felt like I was there! One minute I’m laughing and enjoying the company of lovely people at Pines and Quill, an idyllic writers retreat. The next minute I’m a terrified captive sitting on the hard, filthy floor of a completely dark and locked room. Buchanan has a skillful way of making her words flow and at just the right tempo for all of her books’ well-crafted plots. Please keep this series coming!

I've read other books in this series and felt happy to be back in the familiar setting of the writers' retreat Pines and Quill in the Pacific Northwest. As usual, the action starts right from the beginning and doesn't let up until the last pages. I always want to be there for the meals! Great descriptions, sympathetic and despicable characters, mystery and romance -- what's not to like? Keep going, Laurie Buchanan!

The action continues at Pines and Quill, meant to be a quiet retreat for writers to rejuvenate. Gambino continues his psychopathic war on Mich and all of his friends and family. Hostages are taken the ground are compromised and so all out war begins. A real page turner that keeps the series alive.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Laurie Buchanan has done it again.

Each subsequent book in her Sean McPherson series gets more intense, exciting, and frightening. I didn't think that was possible since the author had me at Book 1: on the edge of my seat, turning pages, and rooting for her well-crafted, sympathetic good guys. But up the ante she has!

And Buchanan is equally adept at presenting the devil incarnate, George "The Bull" Gambino, who is out to exact revenge on McPherson and everyone close to the PI--as if the crime boss hasn't already been responsible for many unthinkable killings. At the author's hands, The Bull weaves an insidious plan with twists and turns, characters pitted against each other, and seemingly no way to prevent some close to McPherson from becoming victims of horrendous human trafficking.

You won't want to miss this one. Hearts are wrenched. Bullets fly. Blood flows. You'll have a lump in your throat from the first page to the last.

If you like fast paced thrillers with a hint of romance you might like this book a lot, but you need to read the previous 3 first… so far, I´m 4 books into the story and I still love the idea of the writing retreat, and I still think the characters are really likeable and relatable even though they tend to repeat themselves a bit.

As for the story as I said it´s really fast paced full of action and with an ending that will make you wish for more.

Thanks to BookSirens and Laurie Buchanan for the opportunity to read the book as an ARC Can’t hardly wait for the next book to come out

Iniquity is the fourth book in the Sean McPherson series.

Pines and Quill retreat is at the center of another mystery. September brings another foursome to the retreat. As they prepare for the new arrivals, they are also getting ready for the Labor Day celebration. Gambino continues his revenge with Sean McPherson and those he loves. As Gambino steps up his vendetta, the gang uses all the resources they have available. The descriptions are so well done that you are brought into the story as if you were a guest visiting the retreat (which I would love to visit). The main characters are well written and feel like a well-worn glove. It is so easy to pick up the next chapter in their lives without missing a beat. Can't wait to read the next one.

I received an ARC from BookSirens for an unbiased review.

I love the Shaun McPherson books. They are always filled with drama, murder, intrigue, good food and friends.

Pine n Quills sounds like a wonderful place for authors to write.

The story ended on a cliff hanger.

4.5/5

Book four of the Sean McPherson series and I am still just as locked in as the beginning.

Buchanan has yet again captured my heart and soul with the characters and setting of these novels. It’s multidimensional, gripping, fast paced but still easy to follow.

I have a love/hate relationship with starting each book because I know it will end with me wanting more, and now I have to wait 😩

Another thing I love about Buchanan as an author- I am always upping my vocabulary game when reading her novels. Always looking up words and making notes as I go.

Another amazing novel in the series and another ending to leave readers wanting more.

4.5 stars, actually.

Welcome back to Pines and Quill, a writers’ retreat located in the Pacific Northwest; where the food is sublime, the scenery beautiful, and murder is around the corner.

And, let’s not forget Hemingway, the story stealer, who this time ends up with a girlfriend!

The 4th book in the Sean McPherson series pretty much picks up where the last novel ended. Pine and Quill is undergoing a renovation, Niall is cooking up a storm, Libby is preparing for the new writers’ and Emma is pregnant. Of course, let’s not forget Gambino, who has his eye set on revenge and destruction.

This time around, Gambino infiltrates the retreat to set up his plan to carry out the destruction of Sean and his family. In a series of events, Emma is kidnapped along with two other young girls in an attempt to get back at Sean. With his every move, and the moves of his friends’ and other writers at the retreat being closely monitored, it is up to all of them to work together and devise a plan to get the girls’ back and take down Gambino.

With the same flair of writing as the previous three novels, Laurie, combines the emotions and insights of each character to create a compelling storyline. The growth and development of the relationships between not only the writers’ in residence, but the main characters is always steady and strong.

This 4th addition to series, is another trifecta of murder, mayhem, and suspense. These thrillers are fast paced, not overly violent, but yet violent, and the character development is always incredible. Laurie writes with precision and always manages through her books, to place the reader ‘there’ with description and detail.

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC in actual book form from the Author and Publisher. I appreciate the opportunity to leave a review. All opinions are my own.

I eagerly await book 5, as the excerpt in the back of this book was pretty cool.

Iniquity: Sean McPherson: Book 4 by Laurie Buchanan is a nail biting adventure from the beginning. The beautiful grounds of Pines and Quill is owned by Sean’s brother in law and sister is a writer’s retreat. Sean and now his wife Emma work at the retreat. Sean, a former police officer, was injured and his partner was killed creating a situation where all officers converged to the scene of the accident. Sean recovered.

A notorious criminal Gambino used “the officer down” to steal drugs from the evidence locker. When the drugs disappeared, Gambino became convinced that Sean is the one who stole the drugs back and knows where they are hidden.

Gambino has been attempting to kill Sean and Emma since book one. He is ruthless, bloodthirsty, rich and has the network to accomplish his goals.

No one is safe!

Iniquity is filled with Gambino’s attempts to drive a wedge between law enforcement friends as well as kill anyone who gets in his way. From the beginning until the end of the book, no one at Pines and Quill is safe. The suspense is like being on a rollercoaster that is out of control!
Iniquity does not disappoint the reader. The Sean McPherson’s series provides hours of excitement!

How will a brave, blind woman figure into the solution of a tightly-woven storyline? Read INIQUITY, Laurie Buchanan’s riveting fourth novel in the Sean McPherson series, to search for clues and find answers. Once again, a propulsive plot, charismatic characters, and shocking suspense set in the misty, mysterious Pacific Northwest both entertains and enlightens.

Thank you, Laurie Buchanan, for a fast and furious mystery. The people are an eclectic bunch, with skills. The scenery is very real. You can hear and smell it through her writing. This was a really good thriller! There was plenty of action and drama with a very original plot! I loved how everyone, family, old friends and new friends all came together to help each other out! They all gained something personal from their experience, more confidence, new self worth etc! I highly recommend this book author and series. Im going to go back and read the previous books as i await the next book in the series! This can be read as a standalone like i did but I loved it so much I want to read them all!

Laurie Buchanan is back at it again with another riveting installment of the Sean McPherson series. Sean "Mick" McPherson has had a busy few months as he has been settling into married bliss with his bride, Emma, and working with his friends, Joe and Rafferty. Unfortunately, life has other plans for Mick. Georgio "The Bull" Gambino has returned with his harrowing antics that wreak havoc in the trio's lives. Iniquity is fast-paced while simultaneously letting you bask in the charm of the locale of Pines & Quill. Like in the previous novels, Niall's cooking makes your mouth water and stomach growl with the delicious food that he prepares. Lest we forget the scene-stealing Irish wolfhound, Hemingway, and now, darling standard poodle, Maggie.
On a personal note, I've been in a bit of a reading-rut but Iniquity has helped pull me out of it. If you feel similarly, the Sean McPherson series is a great remedy.

Disclaimer: I was sent an advance reader copy of the novel. All opinions are my own.

The 4th Pines & Quill writers’ center thriller is full of scary moments and characters we love or love to hate. I wished for more on the attending writers, with bits about what they are writing as we saw in earlier books, but this works as a standalone and is a page-turner!

The caramelized onion and roasted garlic pasta is a delicious note in this Mafia boss Gambino’s 5-year-old vendetta against Mick and his pregnant and disabled wife Emma, once wheelchair-bound. I was glad to see one writer-in-residence is in a wheelchair, keeping the breadth of characters a winning point in this series.

Meanwhile, Gambino has kidnapped two girls, intending to traffic them, and while the outcome is not all rosy, it is a good wrap, still leaving me on edge to get Book Five!

I love that Buchanan always adds info to my shelves of “things-I-didn’t-know,” and writes so smoothly that I am immersed from the first chapter!

Highly recommended.

Thank you to the publisher for this ARC for which I am posting an honest review.

“Iniquity” is another brilliant book by Laurie Buchanan that I could not put down. From page one, the story pulls the reader (and the characters) into fast-paced, life-threatening action and never let’s go. We’re back at our favorite location—the Pines and Quill writing retreat—with a new set of writers arriving unaware of the ongoing battle their hosts have with the Gambino crime boss. The writing retreat ingeniously adds interesting and potentially dangerous characters to each book, who, along with the beloved recurring characters, offer us an intriguing and diverse cast. I’m particularly fond of how this series includes elements of cozy mystery—the picturesque location, culinary delights, and a handsome canine sidekick—but doesn’t shy away from thrilling high stakes, on-the-page villainous scenes. Tightly written with well-plotted twists you won’t see coming, Buchanan’s books are a delight for fans of suspense!

The minute I read about a character willing to burn away his fingerprints with acid, I knew I was in for a wild ride reading Iniquity, Book 4 of the Sean McPherson series. The cringeworthy Gambino enjoys blood in the water, even if it’s his own, as long as it can be used to draw out the expendable on his list. It takes skill to craft an effective plot when the characters you’re rooting for face multiple limitations thanks to a despicable villain. Never fear, author Laurie Buchanan thinks of everything, and the goosebumps come and go as the story shifts from intensity to relief, then revs up again. In between, there are sweet moments among family and between lovers amid breathtaking descriptions of the Pacific Northwest. At the end, readers will long to return to Pines & Quill, a place that reflects the passions of Libby and Niall, complete with the loveable Irish Wolfhound, Hemingway.

Laurie Buchanan is on a proverbial roll for more reasons than one! INIQUITY - the fourth novel in her acclaimed Sean McPherson series - is a taut and atmospheric literary masterpiece that matches its gripping predecessors in bringing its Pines & Quills reading retreat a renewed urgency in this latest spine-tingling yarn involving a human trafficking ring. The narrative holds you captive, much like Emma -Sean's pregnant wife - whom a crime boss kidnaps. Writers-in-residence come to the rescue in a thriller fueled by colorful, fascinating characters and alluring backdrops. Once again, Buchanan rewards buyers with a stunningly crafted novel showcasing literary quotes, brilliantly descriptive writing, splendid use of art, and detailed maps. Buchanan has the skills to turn non-readers into voracious enthusiasts! Order your copy pronto!

It was such a pleasure to return to Pine and Quills as I immersed myself in Iniquity, Laurie Buchanan’s fourth Sean McPherson novel. Buchanan’s writing style is easy to read, her settings immersive, her characters engaging, and her plot twisty as she pits protagonist Sean “Mick” McPherson and two best friends who are law enforcement officers against crime boss Georgio “The Bull” Gambino and his vicious gang of kidnappers, human traffickers, and killers. I love following these characters from episode to episode as they overcome tremendous odds, and I’m now eagerly awaiting the next book. Grab a comfortable seat when you pick up a Laurie Buchanan thriller, because you won’t want to stop reading!

The stakes are even higher in Iniquity, Book Four of the Sean McPherson Novels by Laurie Buchanan. The pages turned fast and furious as I followed along the frightful activities at Pine & Quills, my favorite writers’ retreat. Oh, if only there was such a place! I’d sign up in a nanosecond. A cadre of interesting authors travel to this gorgeous retreat in Washington state to work on their books-in-progress, from fiction to non-fiction. Each author has their own fascinating background which becomes helpful as bullets fly, women are kidnapped, and an evil trafficker of drugs and humans fights hard to kill off Sean McPherson and his family and friends. The twists create many cliffhangers, and a satisfying conclusion (which implies a Book Five, thankfully). Iniquity is a “wicked” good read.

The Excitement continues . . .

Laurie Buchanan has crafted another winner. In the latest installment of the Sean McPherson series, I was riveted from the first scene as crime boss Gambino plots murder while gazing at his aquarium filled with deadly piranha fish.

The continuing relationship between Mick and Emma is always delightful to revisit as well as the picturesque Pines and Quills writers' retreat in the Pacific Northwest.

Be sure to grab a copy and spend a weekend engrossed in this beautiful novel!
