It changes the ending in an out-of-the-blue, tone deaf, counterintuitive way (reminds me of The Pearl of the Soul of the World in that regard) and adds a modern politically correct backstory to the main girl and her family for no reason. The writing is nothing special; it's held up by the artwork alone. Had Morris only done the illustrations and a better writer wrote the prose, we might've had a definitive version of this classic.
