Deborah | 598 comments 1. Furies of Calderon (Codex Alera, #1) by Jim Butcher Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher

I'm a big fan of the author's Dresden Files books, so I thought I would give his Codex Alera fantasy series a try. It has everything I like in a fantasy book: selfless heroes, pure evil antagonists, epic battles, and a touch of romance. It was well written and I absolutely loved it. 5 stars.

Most of the recipes in this book are beyond my culinary skills, but there were a few I may attempt. What I found more interesting, was the cooking history and regional foods of France. 3 stars.

Deborah | 598 comments 4. Nostrum (The Scourge, #2) by Roberto Calas Nostrum byRoberto Calas

This is the second book in The Scourge series and I enjoyed it even more than the first one. Zombies are roaming Medieval England and Sir Edward Dallingridge is looking for the rumored cure, so he can bring back his beloved wife, Elizabeth. I loved the sense of humor in these books, especially from Edward's best friend, Tristan. 4 stars.

American Rory Deveaux and her family decide to spend some time in England. As Rory enrolls in a London boarding school, gruesome murders are taking place mimicking Jack the Ripper. The Complete Mediterranean Diet Everything You Need to Know to Lose Weight and Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease... with 500 Delicious Recipes by Michael Ozner The Complete Mediterranean Diet: Everything You Need to Know to Lose Weight and Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease... with 500 Delicious Recipes

The book makes sense and has tons of recipes, but most of them take a significant time to prepare. I don't know about most people, but I just don't have the time or energy at the end of the day to make elaborate meals. This cookbook is "weekends only" for me. 3 stars.

Deborah | 598 comments 8. Inheritance by Joe McKinney Inheritance by Joe McKinney

Paul Henninger is a rookie cop and the ghost of his father has returned using his black magic to kill anyone who gets in his way and to make sure Paul takes up his "inheritance" to bring about the apocalypse. I thought this was a good horror story and give it 4 stars.

message 10: by Deborah (new)

Deborah | 598 comments 9. The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

The author's account of growing up with dysfunctional parents. The Walls children had to learn to take care of themselves, since their parents were incapable of it. Whenever I read memoirs, I always think that the writers have incredible memories. I barely remember my childhood, so I wonder if a lot of it is exaggerated and/or made up. Or maybe it's because I had a normal, boring upbringing. Either way, it was a compelling read. 4 stars.

Deborah | 598 comments 10. Killer In The Hills (A Jack Rhodes Mystery) by Stephen Carpenter by Killer In The Hills by Stephen Carpenter

Jack Rhodes, a mystery writer, cooperates with the investigation of a murdered B-movie actress turned hooker, Penelope Fox, a woman he doesn't remember marrying during his alcohol fueled days. He also learns he may have a 15 year-old-daughter. This was a quick one and read it in one day. I enjoyed it. 3 stars.

Deborah | 598 comments 11. Murder on the Orient Express (Hercule Poirot, #10) by Agatha Christie Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

I have never read anything by Agatha Christie before and being a lover of mysteries, I should be ashamed of myself. A passenger on the Orient Express is stabbed to death inside his compartment, with the door locked from the inside. Inspector Hercule Poirot happens to be a passenger on the train and is asked to investigate. I really enjoyed the book and trying to guess who was the murderer. I couldn't. I definitely will be reading more of Christie's books. 4 stars.

Deborah | 598 comments 12. Heretic (Templar Chronicles, #1) by Joseph Nassise Heretic by Joseph Nassise

Cade's unit has been assigned the task of finding them and to make sure the artifact does not fall into the necromancers hands. I thought the book was an okay read, but I didn't like it enough to continue on with the series. 2 stars.

Deborah | 598 comments 25. Serpent's Kiss (The Beauchamp Family #2) by Melissa de la Cruz Serpent's Kiss by Melissa de la Cruz ~ The second book in the Beauchamp Family series. I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first book. It seemed the story focused mostly on Freya and her fiancé Killian's love life and also Ingrid and Matt's budding romance, which at times had me rolling my eyes. I gave it 3 stars, but for me it's really 2 1/2. I'm not sure if I want to continue on with this series.

26. The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare ~ After Kit Tyler's grandfather dies, she moves from her beloved Barbados to live with her aunt and uncle in a Connecticut Puritan community. Deborah | 598 comments 28. Plum Island by Nelson DeMille Plum Island by Nelson DeMille ~ A young and attractive couple, biologists that worked on the mysterious Plum Island, are found murdered outside of their home. Wounded homicide detective, John Corey is asked by the local police chief to help out on the case. I would have liked this novel better if the author had not gone into so much detail about everything and if the main character hadn't been such a smart ass ALL of the time. 3 stars.

29. The Spiral Tattoo by Michael J. Parry The Spiral Tattoo by Michael J. Parry ~ Elanore is a eight-foot troll and Gurt is a six-inch fairy and partners in the guardsmen. They find the body of a naked waitress with a tattoo in a spiral across her body. I enjoyed this one and give it 3 stars.

30. The Coffin Dancer (Lincoln Rhyme, #2) by Jeffery Deaver The Coffin Dancer by Jeffery Deaver ~ Detective Lincoln Rhyme is on the hunt for the elusive hitman known as the Coffin Dancer. It took me awhile to get into this one and I found the killer more interesting than Rhyme continually barking out orders. 3 stars.

32. Locke & Key, Vol. 1 Welcome to Lovecraft by Joe Hill Locke & Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft by Joe Hill ~ I've never read a graphic novel before, so I decided to give this one a try. I liked the artwork, but I was a little confused by the story. I'm not completely sold on this, but I'm going to read the entire series before I make my final judgement on whether to continue reading graphic novels. 3 stars.

33. Locke & Key, Vol. 2 Head Games by Joe Hill Locke & Key, Vol. 2: Head Games by Joe Hill ~ I did enjoy this volume more than the first one. I read it on my iPad through Scribd and it seemed like the story was out sync. One page stated it was the end of that volume, but then it continued on with something that seemed to have occured previously in the story. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seemed weird. 4 stars.

36. Black Damask by Anna Rossi Black Damask byAnna Rossi ~ A story of two sisters, beautiful Annabelle and plain Margaret. Annabelle finds that she has a frightening ability which as the years go by, the consequences of her actions become disastrous for the sisters. I liked the book when the girls were young, but when they became of age, it seemed like it was all about how much sex they could have, ugh, which I found monotonous. 2 stars.

37. A Body in the Backyard (Myrtle Clover Mystery #4) by Elizabeth Spann Craig A Body in the Backyard by Elizabeth Spann Craig ~ A cozy mystery featuring octogenarian Myrtle Clover. When a dead body is found in her backyard, with his head bashed in with one of her garden gnomes, she vows to find the murderer. It was an okay read. 2 stars.

Too much time is spent on the college boys boring philosophy class and not enough on the actual mystery. 2 stars.

43. A Great Deliverance (Inspector Lynley, #1) by Elizabeth George A Great Deliverance by Elizabeth George ~ Scotland Yard Inspector Thomas Lynley and Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers are sent to Keldale to investigate a murder. Oh, and Tres has a weird, enchilada-eating cat. 3 stars.

48. Emma's Secret (Finding Emma, #2) by Steena Holmes Emma's Secret by Steena Holmes ~ I didn't realize that this was book two in a series until I had already started reading it. 58. Pure Instinct by Robert W. Walker Pure Instinct by Robert W. Walker ~ I didn't realize this was book 5 in a series when I started reading it. 79. From the Ashes (Survivors of the Dead, #1) by Tony Baker From the Ashes by Tony Baker ~ I'm a sucker for zombie books. This one takes place in San Francisco with the main character being a retired cop name Harold Lancaster. I enjoyed the humor between Harold and his fellow cops and there's plenty of zombie killing. 3 stars.

80. The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins ~ I was disappointed in this one. Rachel is an unemployed alcoholic and takes the same train every day. The occupants of one of the houses, she has made up stories in her mind of their perfect life. When the wife goes missing, she gets herself tangled up in the investigation. I thought the mystery was a good one, but I did not find any of the characters likable and that kind of ruined the book for me. A generous 3 stars.

92. Knock Knock by S.P. Miskowski Knock Knock by S.P. Miskowski ~ Three best friends unknowingly release a malignant spirit that wrecks havoc on them and the small town they live in for the next fifty years. I was disappointed in this book, just plain boring. 1 star.

94. Until Proven Guilty (J.P. Beaumont, #1) by J.A. Jance Until Proven Guilty by J.A. Jance ~ This is the first book in the J.P. Beaumont series. I enjoyed the actual mystery, but the plot line involving a rich, hot blonde falling for the older, average Beaumont was ridiculous. If not for that, I would have given the book 4 stars, so 3 stars instead. I'll give the second book a chance and see if I want to continue with this series.
