Bain is the character of The Hobbit. He is the son of Bard the Bowman. In Peter Jackson's trilogy, he was played by John Bell.

Overview[]

Bain appears as a minor character in both the books and the films. However, while in the books his character does not appear enough to be revealed (it is only known that he led Dale after the death of his father Bard, and after the death of Bain himself, Dale was led by Bain's son Brand, who died in battle with Dain Ironfoot), in the films he takes an active part. For example, he helps his father Bard hide the dwarves led by Thorin in their house and tells them that his ancestor Girion was still able to hit Smaug with an arrow, but that arrow only broke off part of Smaug's scales, but did not kill him. Soon Bard ends up in prison (Bain and his sisters at this time remain in the care of the dwarves and the visiting elves, who manage to drive away the invading pack of orcs), but breaks out of there and tries to kill Smaug. At some point, Bain brings his father a black arrow, which is the only one that can kill a dragon. Bard kills Smaug. Soon after, orcs attack Erebor and Dale. Bain tries to protect his sisters, but is himself ambushed by orcs, and only the timely appearance of his father Bard saves the situation. After this, Bain almost never appears in the films.

Personality[]

In the films, Bain is shown as a brave warrior even though he is a teenager. He is also loyal to his father Bard and does everything to make his father proud.
