I have been baptized twice, once in water, once in flame. I will carry the fire of the Holy Spirit inside, until I stand before my lord for judgement.
~ Joshua Graham.

Joshua Graham is a protagonist and ally to The Courier in the Fallout: New Vegas DLC Honest Hearts.

Formerly known as the ruthless Malpais Legate, Graham was an Co-Founder of Caesar's Legion. He served as Caesar's right hand man and top commander up until the First Battle of Hoover Dam when he led the Legion to a devastating loss. Caesar, to show that failure would not be accepted even in the highest ranks of the Legion, had Graham covered in pitch, set on fire, and tossed into the Grand Canyon. Graham survived this attempted execution and left Caesar's legion behind him.

He is voiced by Keith Szarabajka, who also voiced Herschel Biggs in L.A. Noire.

Origin[]

The Burned Man walks.
~ Graffiti referencing Graham

Joshua Graham was born in the town of New Canaan, a Mormon village that was once Ogden, Utah. When he came of age, in keeping with Mormon traditions, he became a missionary and, due to a natural skill with languages, briefly worked with the Followers of the Apocalypse as an interpreter during their missions into the Grand Canyon.

He would later meet with the man who would eventually become Caesar and they founded the group that would eventually become Caesar's Legion. In the years that followed, Graham became Caesar's Legate, most trusted top advisor. When the Legion was defeated during the battle however, Caesar blamed Graham for the loss and had him covered in pitch, lit on fire and thrown into the Grand Canyon. Graham somehow managed to survive this, and legends arose within not only the ranks of the Legion, but around the Mojave Wasteland of the "Burned Man:" the man who defied Caesar's will. As these legends began to spread further, Caesar banned all talk of the Burned Man amongst the rank and file of the Legion, to ensure that Caesar himself remained as a powerful figure.

The Courier first encounters Joshua in Zion National Park, where Graham has taken refuge in an attempt to atone for his sins while serving under Caesar. He has begun to work with a fellow Mormon missionary by the name of Daniel to work with two tribes in Zion National Park: the Dead Horses and the Sorrows, who are under assault from a third tribe, the White Legs. The White Legs, who wish to join Caesar's Legion (unaware that their tribe would be assimilated and their traditions wiped out), would only be allowed to do so if they ensure that Graham was killed this time.

Unlike the pacifist Daniel, Graham favors utilizing violence to ensure that the Dead Horses and Sorrows survive their conflict with the White Legs, and following his path ultimately leads to a conflict with the leader of the White Legs, Salt-Upon-Wounds.

Trivia[]

  • Joshua Graham's primary weapon is a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol. He is introduced cleaning several for the Dead Horses to use should they go to war with the White Legs. Dialogue with him reveals that he is descended from the creator of the .45 pistol, John Browning.

Quotes[]

I don't enjoy killing, but when done righteously, it's just a chore, like any other.
~ Joshua Graham
