Japanese-style Listening Bars are a new way to experience music. The concept of listening bars, like many things, has its origins in Japanese culture. Commonly referred to as HiFi bars in the U.S., listening bars are a “subset of the kissaten, the small and idiosyncratic coffeehouses dotting the side streets in Tokyo (Ben Ratliff, New York Times),” and stem back to the 1950s.

This place had walls full of records, and a DJ in the back corner who only played Korean pop from the 70s and 80s. You could request songs by passing a note to the servers, who'd pass it along to the DJ. And everyone sung along with most songs. Hongdae is the place to be at night. Nearly every bar there is awesome and special. Hongdae, Seoul, Korea. September 2011.
