When the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima in 1945, up to 6,500 children are estimated to have been instantly orphaned. They were forced to make it on their own in a city of ruins, struggling against hunger and loneliness. Not much is known about the lives of these children but their fate has been drawing increased attention in the run-up to the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.
