Astr: Black Holes & Quasars
In Black holes, matter is squeezed into a tiny space, making gravity so intense that not even light can escape. This can happen when a massive star collapses at the end of its life. Many galaxies have massive black holes in their center; thus, some black hole pins are in the Galaxies Galore board. Quasars are massive & extremely remote objects that emit exceptionally large amounts of energy. Quasars may contain massive black holes & may represent a stage in the evolution of some galaxies.

IMBH candidate in Omega Centauri
An international team of astronomers has used more than 500 images from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope spanning two decades to detect seven fast-moving stars in the innermost region of Omega Centauri, the largest and brightest globular cluster in the sky. These stars provide compelling new evidence for the presence of an intermediate-mass black hole.
Massive black holes may eat differently in small galaxies than in large ones
This artist’s concept shows a black hole (center) surrounded by a hot accretion disk of material. Optical and infrared light are believed to come from the outer accretion disk, while X-rays are generated in a corona close to the black hole.
