Bottom water when:

1️⃣ Your potting mix has gone SUPER dry and you go to top water and the water streams quickly through without absorbing much into the soil. 

If you have a peat-based potting mix, peat moss becomes very hydrophobic (repels water) when it is bone dry.

Although you can rewet the soil with a few top waterings in a row, it is easier to bottom water, walk away for a while, and come back. Let time do the work!
