Chernobyl liquidators

A 2001 law promised housing, medical care to this group of heroes, but scandalously has never been implemented. Maybe interest sparked by the remarkable TV series will change that

Robots couldn't handle the intense radiation at Chernobyl, so the dangerous nuclear cleanup job fell to the "liquidators" — a corps of soldiers, firefighters, miners, and volunteers.

This is a medal awarded to people who worked in the cleanup during the aftermath of the nuclear disaster at the Chernobyl generating station in 1986. The symbols are alpha, beta, and gamma radiation over a drop of blood. The text says "Participant in the liquidation of the accident consequences" and the four characters at the bottom are an acronym for the generating station's name.

Awarded for help with cleanup of the Chernobyl disaster. I'm particularly fond of the little alpha, beta, and gamma particles. If you watch closely in the movie Coraline, you can spot this medal on the chest of Mr. Bobinsky.
