Imagine that you’re swimming out into your local lake. You’re a capable swimmer, you know this body of water like the back of your hand, and you feel confident while athletically stroking through water enveloped by the early morning mist. You decide to dive underwater for a bit—you know, for fun—and that’s when you see it: the shadowy silhouette of something huge, rusted, and covered in seaweed. You panic, rise to the surface, and swim to the shore. Trembling. Terrified.

The submersible DeepSee hovers nearly 600-feet deep over the caldera of an ancient dormant volcano on the seamount Las Gemelas located 500-miles off the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. This expedition took Dr. Greg Stone and me to depths of nearly 500-meters to explore the Las Gemelas seamount. While most National Geographic expeditions take about 2 years to complete my story on seamounts took 4 bringing me to places I barely thought possible.  Many more mountains exist in Earths ocean than do on land yet most remain unexplored. In most cases seamounts are places of high biodiversity and are oases for life in the open sea.
