Herding dogs

The shepherd family of dog breeds includes some of the most popular dogs in the world, such as the German Shepherd, the Australian Shepherd, and the Border Collie. These dogs are all considered herding dogs, which means they were originally bred to herd livestock.

Today is National Dog Day, and to celebrate I’ve written a little poem called “When Sheepdogs Dream” which I dedicate to all herding dogs around the world.

The Belgian Tervuren originated in the town of Tervuren, Belgium, in the late 19th century. It traces its ancestry to certain Belgian Sheepdogs, which, unlike their litter mates, carried distinctive long coats of a blackened fawn color.

There are many reasons why dog owners might want a herding breed. They might have a herding job for them, or they simply want to get a highly trainable, intelligent dog breed that makes an energetic pet. Plus, if you are interested in competing in herding trials, one of these dog breeds will make a fantastic competitor.
