Cyanobacteria

Also known as blue-green algae, these organisms evolved oxygenic photosynthesis resulting in the production of oxygen as a waste product of carbon fixation and the making of sugars. I am grateful to these creatures (better known as pond scum) because they gave us our oxygen rich atmosphere, our protective ozone layer, and paved the way for the eukaryotes.
