Ghost Harpooner (Earth-616) from Captain America Comics Vol 1 39 0002

The old man

The man who was known as the "Ghost Harpooner" was a crazy old man who lived in Nantucket, Massachusetts. He was obsessed with Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick and believed the ship named after the book was cursed and needed to be destroyed. He began working with a local whaler named Silas to promote the superstitious people of Nantucket to believe a "ghost harpooner" killing fishermen. Of these men murdered was the current owner of the Moby Dick. The ownership of the boat then changed hands to the owners daughter Molly. Unknown to the old man, Silas sought to force Molly to sell the ship for a fraction of its value by making people too frightened to sail on it and force her out of business.

In the summer of 1944, this plan came to fruition when Molly had troubles getting a crew of men to join her on a whaling expedition. During a rally at the Nantucket Inn, the old man tossed a harpoon through the window and killed one of the fishermen. This was witnessed by all gathered, including Private Steve Rogers and James Barnes (secretly Captain America and Bucky). When the sailors rushed outside, they only found the old man, raving about the Ghost Harpooner and dismissed him as a likely suspect.

Later, Silas had a bunch of men attack Tom, the man hired to be captain on the Moby Dick's voyage the following day. This forced Molly to captain the ship herself. Silas then smuggled the old man aboard, and when he murdered another crew member, the crew threatened to mutiny if Molly did not turn the ship around and bring it back to shore. Meanwhile, Captain America and Bucky had boarded the ship and were attacked by the old man, but before they could discover who threw the harpoon at them, they were attacked by some of the crew. Fighting their way through the crew, they came upon Molly just as Silas was pressuring her into selling him the ship.

Captain America and Bucky, realizing part of what was going on, stormed into the room and explained their hunch about the murders. Hearing that Silas intended to double cross him and keep the boat, the old man revealed himself and confirmed Cap and Bucky's suspicions. Chased above deck, the Old Man climb up to the crow's nest of the ship and jumped into the waters and drowned. Silas died shortly after battling Captain America on the ship's sails by falling to his death.[1]
