S.H.I.E.L.D. was formed by Nick Fury to protect the world from various threats and keep peace and order.^{[citation needed]}

This organization is composed of well-trained men and women all around the globe. S.H.I.E.L.D. has the most advanced weapons and technology through Stark International until its CEO, Tony Stark aka Iron Man, pulled off his company from weapons manufacturing business, which forced Fury to reverse-engineer their technology and equipment.^{[citation needed]}

When Fury mysteriously disappeared, Maria Hill became director of S.H.I.E.L.D and threatened to arrest the Avengers during a war breaking out between Hydra and A.I.M.^[1]

When Ultron became sentient, he attempted to hack into the mind of Maria Hill to gain access to nuclear launch codes. Luckily, the Avengers came and were able to stop him before catastrophe struck.^[2]

During the Skrull Secret Invasion, the Helicarrier was set to self-destruct and brought down to the river by a Skrull version of Agent Clay Quartermain.^[3]
