History

A scientist with a rare skin condition, an experiment meant to cure him instead turned him into the Waxman. He appeared at popular clubs in LA disguised as handsome men and seduced women. Bringing them someplace alone, his body turned into a waxy form during a moment of passion and smothered them to death. He attempted to do this to Jessica Drew (aka Spider-Woman) who would escape this fate. She later confronted the Waxman after she learned he smothered another woman and in battling him, she blasted him apart and left him for dead. Although after Spider-Woman fled the scene, the Waxman's remains began reconstituting themselves.[4]

Years later, Waxman joined a new version of the Night Shift.[5] After San Francisco was devastated by Terrax the Tamer,[6] they were hired to help find survivors, until Superior Spider-Man learned of Waxman's past as a serial killer from Anna Maria Marconi, and the two had a small row, with Waxman resigning from the Shift, until Octavius froze him in liquid nitrogen, shattering his form. The Shift then denied any knowledge of Waxman's previous crimes.[7]

Waxman later resurfaced under the employment of Zodiac. As part of the villain's plan to break Moon Knight, he kidnapped his psychiatrist, Dr. Andrea Sterman, and Waxman took her place in an attempt to manipulate Moon Knight through their sessions. Parallel to Sterman's impersonation, Waxman started a killing spree of random women. His ruse went unnoticed until Sterman's former patient, Rutherford Winner, confronted Moon Knight for Sterman's disappearance. Moon Knight exposed Waxman during their next session and neutralized him with liquid nitrogen. He locked Waxman in an airtight steel sphere, and threatened to bury him alive if he didn't cooperate. Waxman revealed that Sterman was still alive and disclosed Zodiac's location, but Moon Knight didn't keep his end of the deal and buried him under concrete as retribution for his serial killings.[1]

The Black Spectre dug Waxman up and freed him from the sphere when Moon Knight was nearby. Seemingly insane, Waxman tried to smother Moon Knight, but 8-Ball blew him up and saved the hero.[8]

Attributes

Powers

Shapeshifting: The Waxman's body was totally malleable. He could reshape his body to appear as anyone, male or female. He could also throw chunks of his own flesh and mold it in any shape imaginable. However, he usually used his body to envelop and smother his victims. If blown apart, he could eventually reconstitute himself even if a portion of his skeleton is damaged.[4]

Self-Sustenance: Waxman does not require air or food, and has an indefinite lifespan.[1]

Weaknesses

Waxman is susceptible to temperature extremes. Intense heat can burn him up[2] and very cold temperatures and anything that freezes objects on contact can prevent from regenerating.[7]

Notes

  • Waxman's powers and appearance is similar to the DC Comics' villain Clayface.
