The Attack on Afterlife was an assault planned by Nathaniel Malick on the Inhuman community of Afterlife.
Background[]
- "What would you call this place? A commune, a... a cult? Or... Or is it a prison?"
"It's my home."
"Wow. They really did a number on you. They tell you you belong so that they get you to follow their rules. And... and you are above that now. You... you are too powerful for that." - ―Nathaniel Malick and Kora[src]
Nathaniel Malick kidnapped Daisy Johnson and Daniel Sousa, in hopes of stealing Inhuman abilities in a similar manner to Daniel Whitehall. Malick successfully performed the surgery on Johnson, gaining her ability to control seismic waves.[2] He learned to control his powers, and was aided by Sibyl in gaining the Time Stream, which could help predict the future.[3]
Malick used the Time Stream to predict an attempt by Kora to kill herself, and instead used his abilities to dismantle her gun. He compared Afterlife to a prison, and told her that he could change her fate. Kora noticed helicopters descending on Afterlife, and agreed to work with him.[1]
Attack[]
One of Nathaniel Malick's soldiers attacked Yo-Yo Rodriguez, who attempted to use her powers to stop him, but froze. Melinda May came and defeated his soldier, and gave Rodriquez a gun so that she could defend herself without her powers. May, Rodriguez, Gordon, Li and Jiaying saw Malick using his powers to hurt one of Jiaying's guards, and attracted their attention. Jiaying tried to reason with Kora, who said that Jiaying never actually cared about her, but rather feared her. Kora burned Li's face, and May, Rodriguez, Jiaying, and Gordon fled. They left Afterlife while Malick and Kora tied up the Inhumans living in Afterlife.[1]
Aftermath[]
- "They call it Afterlife. I couldn't have picked a better name myself. Everyone I bring here has been saved from a tragic end and given a new beginning."
- ―Nathaniel Malick to John Garrett[src]
Nathaniel Malick and Kora discussed their plans for the Inhumans, and Malick discussed the unfairness of the decision regarding who got Inhuman abilities. When Kora asked what solution he proposed, Malick suggested anarchy.[1] He helped train Kora to use her Inhuman powers[4] and attacked the Lighthouse while S.H.I.E.L.D. rescued the Inhumans that Malick's team had captured.[5] Malick then tried to torture Jemma Simmons and get her to reveal the location of Leo Fitz, but found that she did not know.[6]
