These five thousand children were among the children chosen to evacuate Mantilles first as a planet-destroying cosmic cloud approached. In 2269, when updating James T. Kirk on the evacuation's progress, Robert Wesley felt it wasn't enough.
Following Spock's successful attempt to convince the cloud to return where it came from, Kirk ordered Uhura to tell Wesley it was safe to bring the children back. (TAS: "One of Our Planets Is Missing")
