An obituary was a written passage about the life of an individual which was published immediately following their death. In the 20th century, they were typically published in the obituary column of newspapers.

Frustrated by Commander Saru and the USS Discovery crew's handling of finding information about the planet they crash landed onto in 3189, Philippa Georgiou compared Sylvia Tilly's report to "reading an obituary backwards." (DIS: "Far From Home")
