The Grissom class[1] was a 25th century Federation starship type, a tier 6 light science vessel[1] class in Starfleet service in the 2410s[2] decade. The Grissom class was a variant subclass of the Oberth-class science vessel. It was equipped with a phased-space membrane, a technology based on the Federation's failed interphase cloaking device[1]. (STO - House United mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock", STO website: House United: It's Time for a New Genesis)

History and specifications[]

Grissom, aft

The Grissom in 2285.

The Grissom-class prototype USS Grissom (NCC-96380) was launched alongside the USS Clarke (NCC-91600), the Clarke-class cruiser lead ship, soon after the conclusion of the Klingon Civil War[4] in the year 2411.

It was the first class equipped with the phased-space membrane, based on an illegal experiment performed aboard the USS Pegasus in 2358[5]. This membrane partially phased the vessel and incoming fire to shield it from damage. Its energy was derived from auxiliary power. (STO website: House United: It's Time for a New Genesis)

Both ships performed flight tests in space. (STO website: House United: The New Genesis Bundle)

The Grissom and its class were named for the ill-fated Oberth-class science vessel USS Grissom (NCC-638), which was destroyed by Commander Kruge in 2285. (STO website: House United: It's Time for a New Genesis, TOS movie & novelization: The Wrath of Khan)

Rated tier 6, the Grissom was classified as a light science vessel. Compared to a baseline Khitomer Alliance science vessel, the Grissom sacrificed hull integrity for agility. A tier 1 version, which could be commanded by an Alliance officer holding the rank of lieutenant or its equivalent, was classed as light cruiser. (STO website: House United: It's Time for a New Genesis)

Grissom-class vessel.

The ship's components were interchangeable with the two 23rd and 24th century variants of the Oberth-class science vessel. (STO - House United mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

By default, an Oberth-class vessel was 120 meters long and operated by a crew of 80. (The Official Starships Collection Issue 36: "Oberth class")

Like any spacecraft operated by the militaries of the Khitomer Alliance, ships of this class had access to the Federation transwarp network, the Iconian gateway network, and could attain quantum slipstream and transwarp velocities. By default, this class was armed with phaser beam arrays and photon torpedo launchers. (STO - House United mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Livery[]

In the 25th century, the hull design of the Grissom-class light science vessel allowed its commanding officer to choose from different livery materials. These could be modified at Starfleet Shipyard Operations and Khitomer Alliance shipyard interfaces. The material options included upgrade, veteran, and numbered types. (STO - House United mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance, the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion. (STO missions: "Coliseum", "Cold Storage", "Boldly They Rode")
