Isotopes are types of atoms of an element that have different mass than other atoms of the same element due to differing numbers of neutrons in the atomic nucleus. Two isotopes represent variant forms of the same element because they have the same number of nucleus protons and position on the periodic table. Isotopes of a given element have similar or identical chemical properties, but have different atomic mass and physical properties.
