The "omegatron" was a fake weapon used as a bluff by James T. Kirk in the 2270s.
History and specifics[]
In 2273, shortly after the V'Ger incident, the refit USS Enterprise was confronted by three K'Tinga-class Klingon battlecruisers seeking to capture the starship to study its technology. Kirk threatened to use his "omegatron" if they did not cease fire, which Commander Krell called out as a bluff.
While there was no such thing as an omegatron, phasers in the Enterprise-subclass had been reconfigured to channel power directly from the warp engines, which Kirk considered a design flaw. Montgomery Scott took advantage of the flaw to fire one overloaded phaser blast at an extremely high intensity, which disabled Krell's deflector shields, weapons and warp drive. The Enterprise was left a sitting duck, however, as the energy discharge disabled her own engines and phaser emitters. Kirk bluffed that a further demonstration of the omegatron could be given if Krell did not stand down. Krell immediately withdrew his ships back to Klingon space. (TOS comic: "Renewal")
