A security guard is a crewmember or privately employed individual who works in a security role at a business, outpost, starship or starbase. A service organization security guard with commissioned officer's rank was known as a security officer.

In the United Federation of Planets, the Starfleet Security personnel are charged with protecting Starfleet and the Federation's interests and citizens. During the 23rd century, a security officer often accompanied landing parties.
