St. Basil the Great was born at Caesarea of Cappadocia (Asia Minor) in 330 AD. He was one of ten children of St. Basil the Elder and St. Emmelia. Several of his brothers and sisters are honored among the saints. St. Basil received his education in Constantinople & Athens, joining University of Athens in 351, where he studied philosophy & classical works. He travelled extensively in Syria and Egypt, visiting the great hermits in monasteries of the Eastern and Western Deserts of Egypt.
