Open Future Foundation
Openbaar bestuur
We develop new approaches to an open internet that maximize societal benefits of shared data, knowledge and culture.
Over ons
At Open Future we shape today’s digital policies with tomorrow’s challenges in mind. We put our knowledge and experience to work along EU institutions and civil society to ensure that the principle of openness is reflected in the European Union’s digital policy framework. We believe that Europe has a mission to keep the internet open and make it better. To rebuild it, so that it is a place governed by equal opportunities, democratic access to information and respect for fundamental rights. A public space built on the idea of the commons. We work on advancing Digital Public Spaces, building Data Commons and designing the Future of Open. We do this by developing approaches to open that maximize the societal benefits of information resources. The current European policy environment provides a real opportunity to realise these objectives by enacting meaningful legislative change. At the same time we are also setting our sights on developing initiatives for the next European Commission to take up.

At the June AI and the Commons community call, we discussed the heritage sector’s relationship to generative and analytical AI. Our guests, Dr Mathilde Pavis and Michael Weinberg, provided a short overview of how the heritage sector currently engages with AI technologies and argued that the fears surrounding the impact of AI should not cause cultural institutions to question their commitment to Open Access. You can read the summary of our conversation in the link to be accessed through the comment 👇 #Heritage #AI #genAI #GLAM #OpenAccess

Last week, we responded to the EU Commission's "How to master Europe's digital infrastructure needs?” White Paper. While we agree on the need for investment, we find much of the analysis lacking. In his opinion piece building on the response, Paul Keller explains why Europe should prioritize Public Digital Infrastructure that supports democracy and fundamental rights. The European Commission asked in February: how does Europe master its digital infrastructure needs? The answer provided in EC’s white paper – strengthen European Telecoms – is flawed and fails to address real needs. In our submission to Commission’s consultation of the white paper, we argue that Europe needs to invest in Public Digital Infrastructure that is designed to protect digital rights and to promote democratic norms and values.
