They are in the parlor of the home one evening at sunset, he playing a melody softly upon the harpsichord, and she standing by his side singing. There comes a rough, heavy-bearded tramp, who is admitted into the house and given food. And while he eats he hears the sweet music and goes toward it. Suddenly his eyes fall upon the picture of a brown-eyed girl; it is not Margaret, it is her mother. He walks to the old man and shakes his fists in his face, and says. "You stole her from me twenty years ago. I swore then that you should suffer." Then the tramp leaves and the old man, full of anguish, totters over to the picture and holds a vase of roses before it. He sits down and sees a vision of his wife. Judson Blair, of the Secret Service, has seen the girl. Soon afterward he meets her and her father out walking. The old man is taken ill, necessitating Blair's assistance to get him home. And so their friendship and their love grows. But the tramp has made good his threat and a letter comes to Blair to arrest Bennett, wanted on an old charge of embezzlement. After a terrible mental struggle Blair resigns his position and returns the warrant. He goes to Margaret's house and meets her again, listening to the soft music of a melody from within.
