He himself had seen young Walters shoot down Belle Bolter and her companion, but at the trial the witnesses taken by the police did not appear, and on several occasions the lawyer saw the murdered man and woman walking the streets. Refusing to believe himself victim of a hallucination, he did some detective work and traced the mystery to the murderer's millionaire father, who had almost proved that the crime never occurred.
